Antalya is a Mediterranean port with the Taurus Mountains standing directly behind it, and the modern city was built straight over the ancient one — so the old fabric survives in one walled quarter rather than in fragments scattered across town. Kaleiçi is that quarter: cobbled lanes of Ottoman houses dropping down to a harbour that dates to the Roman period, with Cumhuriyet Square at its landward edge. The urban population is 1,335,002 and the province around it holds 2,722,103.
