Antalya

Antalya is a Mediterranean port with the Taurus Mountains standing directly behind it, and the modern city was built straight over the ancient one — so the old fabric survives in one walled quarter rather than in fragments scattered across town. Kaleiçi is that quarter: cobbled lanes of Ottoman houses dropping down to a harbour that dates to the Roman period, with Cumhuriyet Square at its landward edge. The urban population is 1,335,002 and the province around it holds 2,722,103. Scale explains the rest of what a visitor meets — 13.4 million foreign visitors arrived by air in 2022, most of them passing through on the way to the coast either side of the city.
