Parlament Hakkında

The Austrian Parliament is a Greek temple, and the choice was an argument rather than a fashion.

Theophil Hansen built it between 1874 and 1883. The commission decided that classical Greek architecture was the appropriate style for a parliament, because of the connection to the Greeks and the idea of democracy — the building is a statement about what it is for.

It covers more than 13,500 m² and holds over a hundred rooms: chambers, committee rooms, libraries, dining rooms and gymnasiums.

It is part of the UNESCO-listed historic centre and is a listed building in its own right.

Athena outside, and the chambers of both houses inside.

The Pallas Athena fountain in front was built between 1893 and 1902 by Carl Kundmann and Josef Tautenhayn. Athena stands on a pillar in armour under a gilded helmet, a spear in her left hand and a Nike in her right. She has her back to the parliament, which Viennese humour has never let go.

A visitor centre opened in October 2005 and brought the public in through the front at ground level, instead of through the side doors.

The building reopened in 2023 after five years of renovation, restoring much of what the Second World War damaged.

An hour on a guided tour, fifteen minutes from the pavement.

The tour covers the chambers and the historic halls and is the only way past the visitor centre.

The rooftop terrace added in the renovation gives a view along the Ring that no other building on it offers to the public.

The Rathaus is two minutes north across the Ring and the Volksgarten two minutes south, so this is one stop on a Ringstrasse walk rather than a destination.

Sitting in the public gallery during a debate is a longer and stranger visit, free, and open to anyone who clears security while there is space.

A weekday when the houses are not sitting, which is when the chambers can be shown.

Tours are limited when parliament is in session and the schedule is published in advance.

The Athena fountain faces the Ring and takes afternoon light; the building's west front is best in the morning.

The renovation completed in 2023, so the building is at its cleanest in living memory.

Summer is the parliamentary recess, which means fewer restrictions on the tour and no chance of seeing the chambers in use — the trade-off runs both ways and depends on which of the two the visit is for.

Biletler

The visitor centre is free. Guided tours are ticketed and are booked in advance.

The visitor centre itself carries an exhibition on the Austrian constitution and the work of the two houses, and is a reasonable twenty minutes for anyone who cannot get a tour place.

Sittings of the National Council are open to the public from the galleries, free, subject to space and security.

The Innere Stadt, on the Dr.-Karl-Renner-Ring, between the Volksgarten and the Rathaus.

Volkstheater on U-Bahn lines U2 and U3 is three minutes away and Rathaus on the U2 is five. Ring trams 1, 71 and D stop at Stadiongasse–Parlament outside.

The U-Bahn has five lines and 109 stations over 83.9 km, running from about 05:00 to 01:00 and all night at weekends.

Tours are booked in advance and are restricted or cancelled when the houses are sitting.

Security screening applies at the entrance and identification is required.

The building was closed for five years to 2023, so a great deal of published information about visiting it is out of date.

The Ring in front is a fast multi-lane road with tram tracks and the fountain is on an island in it; cross at the signals.

Demonstrations are held on the Ring outside regularly and close the pavement.

The ramp and the portico with Athena in front is the photograph, taken from the Ring pavement opposite in the afternoon, when the gilded helmet catches the light.

The building is long and low and does not fit a tight frame; the Volksgarten side gives the distance.

The rooftop terrace, added in the renovation, is the only public elevated view along the Ringstrasse and is worth the tour on its own.

Photography inside is permitted on tours except in the chambers when they are in use.
