Bu ne

The Riesenrad is a Victorian Ferris wheel that has been turning at the gates of the Prater since 1897, and it was built for an emperor's anniversary.

It went up for Franz Joseph's Golden Jubilee. Harry Hitchins and Hubert Cecil Booth designed it and Lieutenant Walter Basset Bassett built it — the whole thing is an English engineering export of the 1890s.

It stands 64.75 m high. It originally carried thirty gondolas; after the Second World War damage only fifteen were restored, which is why the cabins are spaced so widely apart.

When the Grande Roue de Paris was demolished in 1920 it became the tallest working Ferris wheel in the world, and stayed so for sixty-five years until Japan's Technostar opened in 1985.

İçinde ne var

Fifteen wooden cabins, and a very slow turn.

The cabins are enclosed, heated and large enough to walk about in, which is why they are hired for dinners and proposals. This is not a fairground ride and it does not feel like one.

The rotation is slow enough to hold a conversation at the top and to eat a meal over a full circuit.

The wheel appeared in The Third Man in 1949, in the scene that made it internationally famous, and has since been used in The Living Daylights and a long list of television.

It stands at the entrance to the Prater, Vienna's old imperial hunting ground turned public park and funfair.

Ne kadar zaman harcamalı

Half an hour for the wheel, an afternoon for the Prater.

A full rotation and the queue together take about thirty minutes outside peak hours.

The Prater behind it is two things with one name: the Wurstelprater funfair, which is loud, free to enter and pay-per-ride, and the Grüner Prater, an enormous flat park of meadow and chestnut avenues that runs for kilometres and that almost no visitor sees.

The Hauptallee, the main avenue, is 4.4 km of straight tree-lined path and is where Vienna runs.

Sezon ve kalabalıklar

Dusk, when the city lights come on and the wheel is lit.

The view from 65 m is over the flat 2nd district towards the Innere Stadt, so it is a city view rather than a landscape, and it is better after dark than at noon.

The funfair around it is seasonal in parts and the wheel runs year-round with shorter winter hours.

Weekend evenings in summer are the busiest hours the Prater has.

Winter afternoons are the opposite: short queues, bare trees and the city visible further than the summer haze allows.

Biletler

The Riesenrad is ticketed per ride. Current rates are not published on the sources this page uses and are not reproduced here.

Cabins can be hired privately for dinners and events, at a different rate again.

The Prater park itself is free; the Wurstelprater funfair charges per ride with no admission charge to enter.

Oraya varmak

The 2nd district, Leopoldstadt, at the entrance to the Prater.

Praterstern is served by U-Bahn lines U1 and U2 and by the S-Bahn, and the wheel is two minutes from the exit.

The U-Bahn has five lines and 109 stations over 83.9 km, running from about 05:00 to 01:00 and all night at weekends.

The wheel photographs better than the view from it. From the Prater entrance at dusk, lit against a blue sky, it is the picture — and it is the shot The Third Man made famous.

From inside, the glass reflects; press the lens to it and shoot away from the cabin lights.

The city view is flat and distant, and a longer lens picking out St Stephen's spire works better than a wide one taking in the whole 2nd district.

The wheel's ironwork against the sky, from directly beneath, is the picture almost nobody takes.
