Heldenplatz is an unfinished square in front of the Hofburg, and it is the most politically loaded piece of ground in Austria.
After the defeat at Wagram in 1809 the palace fortifications were pulled down and replaced with a curtain wall, opening the space. Gottfried Semper designed the Kaiserforum for it in 1869 as part of the Ringstrasse project; work began in 1871 and the Neue Burg wing went up from 1881. Building stopped in 1913 with the north-western part, towards the Volksgarten, never built.
So the great curved façade faces nothing. The square was meant to be enclosed and it never was.
The Austrian president works in an adjoining wing of the Hofburg; the Federal Chancellery is on the Ballhausplatz beside it.

Two horsemen, a gate that became a tomb, and a balcony.
Anton Dominik Fernkorn made both equestrian statues: Archduke Charles, unveiled in 1860, and Prince Eugene of Savoy in 1865. The Charles is the more remarkable — the horse is balanced on its hind legs with no other support, which was an engineering feat when it was cast.
The Äußeres Burgtor, the Outer Castle Gate of 1824, was rebuilt as a war memorial in 1933–34 and holds a Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
The balcony of the Neue Burg is where Adolf Hitler announced the Anschluss on 15 March 1938 to a crowd filling the square. That is what most of the world knows Heldenplatz for, and Austria has argued about the balcony ever since.

Twenty minutes, and it is the hinge of every walk through central Vienna.
The square joins the Hofburg to the Ring, the Volksgarten to the Burggarten and the Maria-Theresien-Platz to the Michaelerplatz. Almost every route across the 1st district passes through it.
The Neue Burg behind holds the Ephesos Museum, the arms and armour collection and the historical musical instruments, each of which is a separate hour.
The Volksgarten to the north is a rose garden and is the best place to sit in this part of the city.

Early morning, when the square is empty and the scale of it is obvious.
By the middle of the day it holds tour groups, fiakers and the costumed concert touts, and the emptiness that makes it disquieting is gone.
The Neue Burg curves to the south-east, so the façade takes morning light and is in shadow after noon.
The square is used for state occasions, national day ceremonies and demonstrations, all of which close it. It is also where the Christmas market at the Rathaus overflow crowds cross in December.

Free. It is a public square and it is open at all hours.
The museums in the Neue Burg behind it, the Imperial Apartments, the Treasury and the National Library are all ticketed separately; current rates are not published on the sources this page uses and are not reproduced here.
The Äußeres Burgtor and its Tomb of the Unknown Soldier can be walked through without charge.

The Innere Stadt, between the Hofburg and the Ring, beside the Volksgarten.
Volkstheater on U-Bahn lines U2 and U3 is three minutes away and Herrengasse on the U3 is five, through the Michaelerplatz passage. The Ring trams 1, 2, D and 71 stop at Burgring.
The U-Bahn has five lines and 109 stations over 83.9 km, running from about 05:00 to 01:00 and all night at weekends.

There is very little on-site interpretation of what happened here in 1938, and visitors regularly stand on the square without knowing which balcony they are looking at.
The square is closed for state occasions, national day ceremonies and demonstrations, and those close the surrounding streets too.
It is completely open, unshaded and paved, which makes it hot in July and windy in January.
The fiaker carriages on the Michaelerplatz side are priced by the ride; agree the rate before boarding.
The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in the Burgtor is a war grave and is treated as one.

The Neue Burg's curve is the photograph and it needs the morning, when the sun comes over the Ring onto the façade.
The Fernkorn Archduke Charles, rearing with no support beyond the hind legs, is the sculpture worth a close frame; low evening light from the west separates it from the building behind.
From the Äußeres Burgtor looking in, the square, the two statues and the unbuilt gap in the Kaiserforum all appear in one frame, which is the picture that explains the place.
The balcony is small in any wide shot and needs a long lens to be identifiable at all.

Because the Kaiserforum was never finished. The Neue Burg was meant to be one side of an enclosed forum and the opposite wing was never built.
