What it is

Benjasiri Park is a 29-rai public park on Sukhumvit Road between Soi 22 and Soi 24 in Khlong Toei, laid out by the Finance Ministry's Treasury Department on ground that had belonged to the Meteorological Department and opened on 12 August 1992 to mark Queen Sirikit's fifth-cycle, sixtieth, birthday. Benjasiri Park is the Bangkok park built as a setting for sculpture rather than as a lung: twelve permanent works were commissioned for the opening, six more came out of a youth sculpture programme in 1995, and later additions bring the standing collection to twenty-one. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration runs it. The park shares its block with the Emporium and Emsphere and sits directly beneath BTS Phrom Phong, which is why Benjasiri Park is the piece of open ground that far more Sukhumvit visitors walk past than walk into.

What's inside

The shape of Benjasiri Park is a loop path around an ornamental lake with sculpture set along it, and the twelve original 1992 works are the reason to walk that loop slowly. They include a piece by the National Artist Chalood Nimsamer and a three-metre commemorative medal made in Queen Sirikit's honour. Six works from a 1995 youth sculpture programme and three later pieces stand among them — twenty-one in all, on lawns and beside walkways rather than inside an enclosure. The sporting half of the park is kept separate from the art: a jogging circuit, a multi-purpose hard court used for volleyball, basketball and skating, a swimming pool measuring 12.5 by 25 metres, and a large playground. Thai-style pavilions stand near the water. Thai Post reported in 2026 that the Bangkok Art and Culture Foundation and the BMA, advised by the National Artist Nithi Sthapitanan, intend to restore the sculptures, thin the trees that have grown over them, light them after dark and open the pavilions to the public — work described as making Thailand's first art park and scheduled to begin in 2026. Expect parts of the collection to be hoarded off while it runs.

How long to spend

Allow an hour at Benjasiri Park. At 29 rai the park is small enough that a straight walk from the Sukhumvit gate to the far corner takes about ten minutes, but the sculpture is the point and the sculpture is scattered, so an hour is what finding all twenty-one pieces takes without hurrying. Thirty minutes covers a single lap of the lake between shopping stops, which is how most visitors use it. Anyone intending to swim or use the court should budget for that separately: the hour above assumes walking only.

Season and crowds

Benjasiri Park opens at 04.30 and closes at 22.00, every day of the week, according to the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration's public-space listing for the park. Those extended hours took effect in August 2022, and older references have not caught up: the English Wikipedia article still prints 05.00 to 22.00 and the Thai article 05.00 to 21.00. Early morning and the last hour before closing are when the park is genuinely usable, because the open lawns carry almost no shade and between roughly 11.00 and 16.00 the sculpture stands in full sun with nowhere to retreat to. Weekend mornings draw the biggest crowd. The park has long hosted a Buddhist Dhamma session on Sunday mornings and music sessions on Saturday and Sunday, though neither is on the operator's own listing.

Tickets

No entrance charge for Benjasiri Park is published by its operator. What the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration's public-space listing for the park does publish is a hire schedule for filming and events, running from 3,000 to 12,000 baht depending on the activity, together with a note that the park's restrooms carry no service charge. The listing sets out no entrance price at all, so this guide records none rather than asserting a free one on the strength of silence. The operator pages checked on 25 August 2026 were that public-space listing and the BMA's Greener Bangkok park directory; neither names a price to walk in. The swimming pool's charge, if there is one, is not published either, so carry cash if swimming is the plan.

Getting there

BTS Phrom Phong on the Sukhumvit line is the way in to Benjasiri Park: the station stands over Sukhumvit Road at the park's own frontage, and the walk from the platform to a gate is shorter than the walk along the platform. The registered address is Sukhumvit Road, Khlong Tan sub-district, Khlong Toei district, Bangkok 10110, and the park office answers on 02 262 0810. On foot the park is bounded by Sukhumvit Soi 22 and Soi 24 and both sois have gates, which is worth knowing because approaching from the Rama IV side by taxi avoids the Sukhumvit crawl entirely. The BMA's listing records no car park on the site, so the neighbouring mall garages are the practical option for anyone arriving by car.

What to watch out for

The trap at Benjasiri Park is the building work. Renovation began in October 2022 with a first phase reported complete in December 2023, and a further sculpture-restoration and lighting programme is scheduled to start in 2026, so individual works can be fenced off without notice and the operator's own listing is the only place a closure would appear. Dress is ordinary park dress — this is a municipal park, not a temple, and no covering rule applies. The park is public open ground in the middle of Bangkok's densest tourist strip, so the ordinary Sukhumvit cautions hold after dark even though the gates stay open to 22.00; the reliably lit stretches are the ones nearest the malls, and the far corners are not lit at all until the promised lighting arrives. No photography restriction is published for the park. Filming for commercial purposes is a different matter: it is chargeable and has to be booked through the BMA listing, and the sculptures themselves are copyrighted works by named living and recently living artists.

Photography

Benjasiri Park photographs badly in the middle of the day and well in the last hour before closing, when the towers along the north side stop throwing hard shadow across the lawns and the bronze picks up warm light instead of glare. The lake is the frame that gives the park its scale: a sculpture shot with the water in front and the Sukhumvit skyline stacked behind it is what separates a picture taken here from one taken in any other city park. The works stand unenclosed on open ground, so nothing has to be shot through glass or railings, and a low angle is available for every one of them. Photograph the plaque as well as the piece — it is the only reliable way to know afterwards which of the twenty-one was in frame. After sunset the park is dark, and stays dark until the lighting programme is done.
