Riyadh covers 1,973 km² and held 7,009,100 people in 2022, on the eastern bank of Wadi Hanifa at 612 m on the Najd plateau. The grid laid out in 1953 is the single fact that governs a visit: neighbourhoods were drawn as 2 × 2 km blocks, and the more than 130 districts inside fourteen branch municipalities are strung along a north–south commercial spine and a set of ring roads. Nothing joins to anything on foot. What a first visit is actually for sits at the two ends of that history — Al-Masmak Palace in the old Al-Deerah quarter, and the mud-brick At-Turaif district at Diriyah on the city's edge, which carries the UNESCO listing.
