Jeddah is Saudi Arabia's second city and its commercial one, laid along the Red Sea coast in the Hejaz, and for most of its history its business was other people's journeys — the caliph Uthman made it the port for travellers to Mecca in 647, and Mecca is still only 65 kilometres inland. The old walled town, Al-Balad, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014: coral-stone merchant houses with wooden screens, many still held by the families who built them on trade. The rest of the city runs north along the water, newer and much lower.
