What it is

The Pergamonmuseum stands on Museum Island in central Berlin, and at the moment it is a building nobody can walk into. The Staatliche Museen zu Berlin say plainly that the museum is completely closed to visitors because of construction work, and it has been shut in its entirety since 23 October 2023. Three collections share the house: the Antikensammlung, the Vorderasiatisches Museum and the Museum für Islamische Kunst. It was built around objects too large for ordinary galleries, which is why its rooms hold reconstructed architecture rather than rows of cases. The present building went up between 1910 and 1930 to designs by Alfred Messel, carried out by Ludwig Hoffmann. A smaller museum had stood on the same ground shortly before; the artificially stabilised, muddy subsoil of the island damaged it quickly and it was demolished in 1909. The name was never chosen officially. Berliners called the house the Pergamonmuseum because of the reconstructed Pergamon Altar inside it, and the name stayed. The museum's own refurbishment pages say the North Wing and the northern central building reopen on 4 June 2027; the museums' shared ticket page gives 4 July 2027 for the same event. The remainder of the building is not expected back before roughly 2037. Read this page as preparation for a later trip rather than as a stop on this week's itinerary.

What's inside

Nothing is on view inside the building today, so what follows is what the collections are and where they will surface. The reopening of 2027 covers two areas. In the northern central building, the Antikensammlung returns with the Hall of the Pergamon Altar and the Hall of Hellenistic Architecture; the museum describes a new wall colour scheme and much improved lighting, a mosaic from the royal palace of Pergamon moving back to the Telephos Hall above the altar staircase, and a Hellenistic room arranged to read as an ancient agora with a large Athena at its centre. The North Wing goes entirely to the Museum für Islamische Kunst: 25 new rooms, more than 1,000 objects across over 3,300 square metres, covering 1,400 years of the Near and Middle East, with the Mschatta facade, the Aleppo Room, the prayer and residential niches and the Alhambra dome restored and newly installed. The Vorderasiatisches Museum gets a temporary showcase in the Schlütersaal, built around the six-tonne victory stele of the Assyrian king Esarhaddon. What is not in the 2027 reopening matters just as much. The South Wing holds the Ishtar Gate and the Processional Way of Babylon and the Miletsaal with the Market Gate of Miletus, and it stays closed until about 2037. Those reconstructions are too large to move and are sitting in climate-controlled protective casings on site.

How long to spend

No honest visit length can be given for the Pergamonmuseum today, because there is no visit: the building is closed and the operator publishes no admission, no route and no expected duration for it. That gap is worth stating rather than filling. The only figure the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin currently publish that touches the museum's own rooms is the length of the bookable group tour Highlights of the Pergamonmuseum, listed as 90 minutes and given in German, for visits from 8 June 2027 onwards. A guided highlights tour is a poor proxy for a self-directed visit; it is a curated line through a few rooms, not the time an unhurried reader will spend among reconstructed architecture and 25 new rooms of Islamic art. Once individual tickets appear and the floor plan is published, a realistic figure can be recorded here from what the museum itself says. Until then, the practical planning question is different: how long to give the substitute. Pergamonmuseum. Das Panorama, the exhibition building a few steps away that holds Pergamon sculpture and Yadegar Asisi's 360-degree panorama of the ancient city, is a single-hall experience with a slow light cycle, and most people find it a shorter stop than a full museum. Budget the rest of the day for the Museum Island houses that are actually open.

Season and crowds

There is no good time to go this year. The opening-hours page of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin lists the Pergamonmuseum with a single line instead of a timetable: the museum is completely closed to visitors because of construction work. Every day of the week is closed, there is no reduced-hours arrangement, and there is no lobby, shop or foyer open to the public. The next date to plan around is the reopening. The museum's profile, its refurbishment page and its own plan-your-visit page all give 4 June 2027 for the North Wing and the northern central building, while the shared tickets and admission page gives 4 July 2027; both dates are printed on the operator's site and the discrepancy has not been resolved there. The museum's refurbishment FAQ also says outright that delays cannot be ruled out on a project of this size, so a trip built around the opening week is a trip built on a date that has already moved before. If the point of the visit is Pergamon itself, the thing that is open is Pergamonmuseum. Das Panorama, and its hours are ordinary Museum Island hours: closed Monday, and 10:00 to 18:00 Tuesday through Sunday, with no midday break. The neighbouring James-Simon-Galerie also stays open throughout the closure.

Tickets

No ticket to the Pergamonmuseum is on sale, and no price for one has been published. The museum's plan-your-visit page says individual tickets are expected to go on sale from December 2026, with other group offers following in spring 2027; the only thing bookable now is the group tour Highlights of the Pergamonmuseum, on limited capacity, for visits from 8 June 2027. What a visitor will pay after the reopening is simply not stated yet, so any figure quoted elsewhere for a Pergamonmuseum ticket today is not coming from the operator. The prices that do exist are for the substitute and the neighbours. Pergamonmuseum. Das Panorama costs 12.00 EUR, or 6.00 EUR concession. The Museumsinsel ticket, which is 24.00 EUR for one day and 12.00 EUR concession in its combined form with the Panorama, covers the open Museum Island houses; the general ticket page notes the same 24 euro Museumsinsel ticket, and repeats that the Pergamonmuseum itself is closed. One trap is worth naming: the Museum Pass Berlin, the three-day ticket, is explicitly listed as not valid for Pergamonmuseum. Das Panorama, even though it admits the holder to the other Staatliche Museen zu Berlin venues. Tickets can be bought online up to four weeks ahead or at any museum counter.

Getting there

The Pergamonmuseum sits in the middle of Museum Island, along the Kupfergraben, directly abutting the modern James-Simon-Galerie. There is no visitor entrance to find at the moment, because there is no entrance in use; what a walker sees from the street is hoarding, cranes and a construction site that will be there for years. The address to aim for is the one that is open: Pergamonmuseum. Das Panorama, at Am Kupfergraben 2, 10117 Berlin, a few minutes' walk away and described by the museum as wheelchair accessible. Public transport serves this corner densely. The museum lists the U-Bahn station Museumsinsel, the S-Bahn stations Friedrichstraße and Hackescher Markt, trams at Am Kupfergraben and Hackescher Markt, and buses at Friedrichstraße and U Museumsinsel. Every one of those is a short walk from the island. No car is needed and a car is an active nuisance here: this is a dense central district with restricted, expensive kerbside space, and the operator publishes no visitor parking of its own. The site also names the pedestrian Pergamon Bridge over the Kupfergraben as part of the works, so footpaths and approaches around the building change during construction and a route that worked last year may be fenced off this year.

What to watch out for

The commonest mistake is buying something. Resellers and listing sites still advertise Pergamon Museum entry, and the museum is shut; whatever such a ticket admits the holder to, it is not this building. Check the smb.museum opening-hours page before paying anyone. The second mistake is assuming the 2027 reopening restores the famous room a reader has in mind. It does not restore the Ishtar Gate or the Processional Way of Babylon, nor the Market Gate of Miletus: those are in the South Wing and the Miletsaal, closed since 23 October 2023 and not expected back until around 2037. What returns in 2027 is the Pergamon Altar hall, the Hall of Hellenistic Architecture and the new Museum für Islamische Kunst. The third is the date itself. The operator prints 4 June 2027 on three of its own pages and 4 July 2027 on its tickets page, and its refurbishment FAQ says delays cannot be ruled out. Book flexible travel around it. On accessibility, the museum is candid: the refurbishment adds lifts and more reachable rooms, but it states that some rooms will still not be accessible to wheelchair users after the work, so a visitor who needs step-free access should confirm the specific rooms nearer the time rather than assume the whole house.

Photography

There is no interior to photograph. Until the reopening, the Pergamonmuseum offers exactly one subject: a large, scaffolded 1910s museum wrapped in a construction site, and that is a more interesting picture than it sounds. The best vantage is from the far bank of the Kupfergraben, where the massive three-wing block reads against the pale, sharp-edged James-Simon-Galerie beside it, and the contrast between Messel's heavy stone and the newer colonnade does most of the work. Late afternoon puts the sun behind the Kupfergraben side and turns the facade flat; the softer light on this elevation comes in the morning. Expect fencing, site traffic and hoardings in the lower third of any frame, and either compose above them or use them, because they are the honest subject right now. Inside Pergamonmuseum. Das Panorama the conditions are the opposite: one dark rotunda, a very wide painted scene and a lighting cycle that moves from night to day over several minutes. That cycle is the picture. Wait for a full turn before shooting, keep the camera braced rather than raising the ISO, and accept that a phone will struggle at the darkest part of the loop. The museum also publishes a detailed 3D scan of the Pergamon Altar online, which is the only way to see the altar in detail before 2027.
