Über Place Vendôme

Place Vendôme is an octagon of uniform stone façades built as a single architectural composition, not a collection of separate buildings that happened to end up on the same square.

Jules Hardouin-Mansart laid it out from 1698 as Place Louis-le-Grand, with a statue of the king at its centre and financiers required to buy the plots and build behind Mansart's own designed frontages — arcaded ground floors, tall mansard roofs, identical rhythm on every side. The royal statue came down in the Revolution.

Napoleon replaced it with the column that dominates the square today, and the square has stayed a byword for wealth and precision ever since, first as a royal set piece and now as an address written on jewellery boxes.

Was ist drin?

The Vendôme Column at the centre, the Hôtel Ritz at no. 15, and a ring of the world's most recognised jewellery houses along the arcades.

The column, raised between 1806 and 1810, copies Trajan's Column in Rome: a spiral bronze relief, cast from cannon seized at Austerlitz, wound around a stone core and topped by a statue of Napoleon. The Paris Commune pulled it down in 1871; the Third Republic put a replica back up within a few years.

César Ritz opened his hotel at no. 15 in 1898, and it has stayed one of Paris's grand addresses since — Coco Chanel lived there for over thirty years. The Ministry of Justice, in the Hôtel de Bourvallais at no. 13, has occupied the square since the 18th century.

Fifteen to twenty minutes to walk the whole octagon and look at the column and the shopfronts.

There is nothing to queue for and nothing to buy a ticket into — the square is looked at, not toured — so the time spent here is set entirely by how long the window displays and the column hold a visitor's attention rather than by any fixed route through the space.

The square runs at full commercial hours during the week, when the jewellers' windows are dressed and staffed; a Sunday or an early morning gives a quieter, more purely architectural view of the octagon with none of the retail bustle competing for attention.

Free — Place Vendôme is an open public square with no admission and no ticket to buy. Ankommen

Between the Tuileries Garden and the Opéra, in the 1st arrondissement, opening south onto Rue de Castiglione toward the Tuileries and north onto Rue de la Paix toward the Opéra.

Tuileries and Pyramides, both on Métro line 1 and lines 7/14 respectively, are the closest stations, each a few minutes' walk from the square. Opéra, served by several lines, sits a short distance further north along Rue de la Paix.

Worauf Sie achten sollten

The square carries a visible security presence — armed police and hotel doormen — because of the concentration of high-value jewellers and the Ritz; this is normal for the address and not a signal of anything unusual happening.

The arcades are narrow and the square fills with delivery traffic and tour groups by mid-morning, which is worth allowing for if photographing the empty octagon is the goal.

The shops themselves are not casual browsing; several require an appointment or restrict entry at busy times, and window-shopping along the arcades draws its own attention from doormen used to a different kind of visitor.

The column framed by the identical façades on either side, shot from one of the four corners where the octagon's diagonal streets enter the square, is the standard composition.

Evening brings the column's gilded statue and the shopfront lighting into contrast with the darkened stone, a different and often stronger image than the flat daylight version. A wide lens helps at close range given how tightly the octagon is built; stepping back into one of the entering streets gives more room to work with, and the symmetry of the arcades on either side rewards centring the shot on the column itself.
