The Technisches Museum Wien is Austria's largest museum of technology and industry, on Mariahilfer Straße in the 14th district, Penzing.

Emperor Franz Joseph I approved its founding in 1908, for the sixtieth anniversary of his reign; the building opened on 20 May 1918, in the last months of the monarchy it had been built to commemorate.

The museum's collection runs from steam engines and early rail technology through to computing and media, assembled largely from Austrian industrial firms and the state railways over more than a century.

The surrounding streets are largely residential rather than touristic, and the museum is the reason to come to this stretch of the district rather than a stop on the way to somewhere else.

A car park sits beside the building for visitors arriving from outside the city, since the site was chosen in 1908 for its size rather than for centrality.

The building is large and not laid out as a single loop; picking two or three halls in advance avoids doubling back across the whole floor plan.

The mine gallery is a real walk-through simulation with low light and uneven footing, which is worth knowing before bringing very young children into it unprepared.

School groups can fill the mini section's interactive stations on weekday mornings during term time.

Some large exhibits, particularly the locomotives, sit close enough together that a wide shot needs to be planned rather than grabbed in passing.
