Über Augartenpalais

Palais Augarten is the Baroque palace standing inside Augarten park in Leopoldstadt. An earlier building on the site was destroyed during the Ottoman siege of 1683; the palace was rebuilt in its present form around 1781 and has served several purposes since, including as an imperial summer residence before it took on its current role.

Since 1948 it has been the home and school of the Vienna Boys' Choir (Wiener Sängerknaben), one of the oldest boys' choirs in the world, tracing its own origins back to the 15th-century Habsburg court chapel even though this particular building only became its home after the Second World War.

This is the palace building itself, separate from Augarten park, which surrounds it and has its own entry in this guide with its own opening pattern and its own history.

Was ist drin?

The palace houses the choir's boarding school and rehearsal rooms; it is a working school and residence, not a museum, and its interior is not open for general sightseeing the way a historic palace usually would be. Roughly a hundred boys, drawn from Austria and abroad, live and study on the grounds while singing in one of the choir's four touring ensembles.

MuTh, the choir's own concert hall, stands next to the palace within the same grounds; opened in 2012, it is a separate purpose-built building seating a few hundred people, where the choir performs regularly, and it is what a visitor actually buys a ticket to enter rather than the palace itself. The two buildings share a garden setting but function as two entirely different visitor experiences: one a closed school, the other a working concert venue with its own programme and its own front door.

Viewing the palace from the park lawn takes only a few minutes, since the building itself is not open to walk-in visitors and there is no interior to tour. A concert at MuTh next door runs to roughly ninety minutes including an interval, and is the realistic way to spend meaningful time at this address rather than simply passing by it.

The Vienna Boys' Choir's concert season at MuTh runs through most of the school year, with a break over the summer holidays when the boys are not in residence and rehearsals pause. The choir's separate Sunday Mass performances take place at the Hofburgkapelle in the Innere Stadt, a different building entirely, and should not be confused with a visit to Augarten when planning a weekend around hearing them sing.

There is no admission ticket to Palais Augarten itself, because it is not open to the public in any form. Tickets are sold for MuTh concerts through the venue's own site (muth.at); prices vary by programme and by season and are not reproduced here, since a figure this specific to a single concert date would be stale within weeks.

The palace stands inside Augarten park; enter through the main Obere Augartenstraße gate and follow the central avenue toward the building, which sits roughly in the middle of the grounds. The same U2 Taborstraße stop and tram connections that serve the park serve the palace and MuTh, so no separate journey is needed for either.

Worauf Sie achten sollten

This is not a sightseeing address in the way the park around it is — there is no public tour of the school, and visitors who arrive expecting to walk through the palace interior will find a closed, working building with no visitor entrance.

Do not confuse a Palais Augarten visit with hearing the Vienna Boys' Choir sing Sunday Mass, which happens at the Hofburgkapelle in the Innere Stadt, not here; the two venues belong to the same choir but are different buildings with different booking routes and different schedules entirely, and a ticket bought for one is not valid for the other.

MuTh concerts sell out for popular programmes well ahead of the date, particularly around Christmas, so treating this as a walk-up option on the day is a poor plan compared with booking well in advance through the venue's own site.

The palace facade, seen across the park lawn with the formal avenue leading up to it, is photographable from the public path without restriction and needs no ticket. MuTh's modern glass-and-timber addition next to the older palace building is itself a contrast worth a frame, since the two structures read as different centuries standing side by side in the same garden.
