Über Haas-Haus

The Haas-Haus is a curved glass-and-stone office and retail building on Stock-im-Eisen-Platz, directly opposite the main entrance of St. Stephen's Cathedral, designed by Hans Hollein and completed in 1990.

Its placement, glazed curve mirroring the cathedral's Gothic mass across the square, was fiercely contested before construction — critics, including some in city government, argued a modern building had no place opposite Vienna's most sacred landmark, and the design was only approved after years of debate and revision.

It replaced an earlier department store building on the same corner that had stood since the 1860s.

Hollein was already established as one of Austria's leading architects when the commission was awarded, and the Haas-Haus remains the building most associated with his name in Vienna itself.

The building holds retail units at street level, offices on the middle floors, and a restaurant with a rooftop terrace on the upper floor, positioned to face the cathedral's south tower directly.

Hollein's signature moves are visible throughout: the postmodern mix of polished granite, mirrored glass and applied classical fragments, and the way the curved glazed section peels away from the more solid stone mass beside it.

There is no public museum circuit inside; the building functions as commercial space rather than a sight with an interior tour.

Hollein deliberately broke the building's mass into several distinct sections rather than one uniform façade, echoing the way the older buildings around the square were themselves built up over different centuries.

Five to ten minutes from the square outside covers a look at the façade and its relationship to the cathedral opposite; there is no ticketed interior for a passing visitor.

A meal or drink at the rooftop restaurant, for anyone booking a table, extends the visit to the length of that meal and adds the closest elevated view of the cathedral's south tower available from any building on the square, typically an hour or more for a full sitting.

Morning light hits the cathedral's south tower and reflects usefully off the Haas-Haus glass at the same time, which is the best combined view of both buildings.

The square in front is busiest at midday and early evening; the reflections in the glazed curve are sharpest when the square itself is not too crowded to see them clearly.

At night, the building's lit interior against the darker glass gives a different, more graphic read of the curve than the daytime reflections do.

There is no admission fee to view the building from the square; it is a commercial building, not a ticketed attraction.

Ankommen

Stephansplatz station (U1, U3) is directly beneath the square the Haas-Haus faces; the exit surfaces within sight of the building.

Several tram lines along the Ringstrasse stop within a short walk, and the building sits at the start of Kärntner Straße, Vienna's main pedestrian shopping street, making it easy to combine with a longer walk south from the cathedral toward the Opera.

Worauf Sie achten sollten

The building remains a point of local debate over four decades after completion, and opinions about it among Viennese residents vary sharply — it is not a universally admired landmark the way the cathedral opposite is.

Stock-im-Eisen-Platz is one of the most crowded pedestrian junctions in the Innere Stadt, funnelling traffic from several directions, so photographing the façade without people in frame takes patience.

The rooftop restaurant is small and books out well ahead for tables with the best cathedral view, so a same-day walk-in should not be relied on.
