Über Café Central

Café Central opened in 1876 inside the Palais Ferstel, a Neo-Renaissance building designed by Heinrich von Ferstel that originally combined the Austro-Hungarian Bank with a covered arcade of shops.

It became one of Vienna's most storied literary coffeehouses in the decades before the First World War, when its long opening hours and cheap newspapers made it a working space for writers and exiles who could not afford heated rooms of their own — Leon Trotsky, Sigmund Freud and the poet Peter Altenberg were all regulars, and Altenberg reportedly gave the café as his postal address.

Viennese coffeehouse culture, of which Café Central is one of the best-known examples, was added to UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2011.

Was ist drin?

The main room is a vaulted, arcaded hall carried on marble columns, closer to a small cathedral nave than to a typical café interior, with chandeliers hanging from the vaults and a resident pianist playing through service hours.

A papier-mâché figure of Peter Altenberg sits at a table near the entrance, life-sized, a fixture added after his death and now one of the café's most photographed details.

The cake counter carries the standard repertoire of Viennese coffeehouse pastry — Sachertorte, Apfelstrudel, Topfenstrudel — alongside the full range of Viennese coffee preparations, from a Melange to an Einspänner, and racks of international newspapers on wooden holders remain part of the room's furniture, a holdover from the era when the café doubled as a reading room.

Café Central sits at the corner of Herrengasse and Strauchgasse, inside the Palais Ferstel, a two-minute walk from U3 Herrengasse station.
