Xi'an still has its wall. Raised in 1370 under the Ming, it runs 11.9 km around the old city, stands 12 m high and is broad enough at the base — 15 to 18 m — to be cycled along the top. Inside it is the grid; outside it the 2020 census counted 12,952,907 people across eleven districts and two counties. Six dynasties governed China from this ground, the Qin and the Tang among them, and the thing most travellers come for — the terracotta army of the first Qin emperor — is buried east of the modern city rather than inside it.
