Shenzhen
In 1980 Shenzhen had 30,000 people. The Central Committee named it China's first Special Economic Zone in May of that year, and by 2020 there were 17,560,000 living on its 1,997 km². This is the consequence a visitor should come prepared for: nine districts and one new district containing almost nothing older than the people walking through them, no historic core to anchor a route, and the world's fourth-busiest container port as the reason any of it exists. Hong Kong lies immediately across the southern border, which makes Shenzhen a city many travellers reach in an afternoon and few plan for.
