Macau
Macau is 32.9 km² holding roughly 720,000 people, which makes it the most densely populated region on earth, and two-thirds of that ground was reclaimed from the sea. It comes in pieces: the peninsula, the islands of Taipa and Coloane, and the Cotai zone filled in between them. Portugal held it as a trading post from 1557 and as a colony until the 1999 handover, and the Portuguese-and-Chinese downtown left behind has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005. The gambling industry here is about seven times the size of Las Vegas's.
