Santiago sits at 570 m in the Santiago Basin, closed in by the Andes to the east and the Chilean Coastal Range to the west, with 6,269,384 people in the capital in 2017 and 6,903,479 across the metropolitan area on 641 km². That enclosure is a fact of the visit and not only of the geography: the same walls that put a snow line at the end of a street also hold the winter smog in. Greater Santiago is more than forty communes, but the visitor's city is the few around the Mapocho, with Cerro Santa Lucía and Cerro San Cristóbal standing out of the grid as the two places to read it from.
