Japon İmparatorluk Koleksiyonu Müzesi

The Museum of the Imperial Collections, Sannomaru Shozokan, preserves cultural works formerly owned by Japan's Imperial Family. Its Japanese name means an imperial storehouse in the third bailey, reflecting its location within the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace. The museum first opened in November 1993. Management transferred from the Imperial Household Agency to the National Institutes for Cultural Heritage in 2023, making it one of that organisation's national museums. The current expanded institution is intended to combine conservation, exhibitions, research and public learning while keeping the Imperial Household's cultural legacy accessible in the palace setting.

The collection ranges across painting, calligraphy and decorative arts including lacquer, metalwork and ceramics. Some works were imperial heirlooms associated with Kyoto court culture, while others were gifts presented by shrines, temples and former samurai families from the Meiji period onward. The museum also preserves objects made for domestic imperial occasions and photographs documenting official tours. Named highlights on the official collection page include the eleventh-century Collection of Chinese and Japanese Poems for Singing on Cloud-Patterned Paper, Kaiho Yusho's Pines on the Shore, and Kano Tanyu's seventeenth-century Scenes from The Tale of Genji. Only selected works appear in exhibitions.

No standard visit duration is published on the official museum pages reviewed. The practical length will depend on which galleries and exhibitions are available after reopening, since the museum is expanding and only selected objects from a broad collection can be displayed at one time. Read the exhibition page before setting a schedule instead of assuming a fixed permanent route. The East Gardens location also adds walking and security time outside the gallery itself. Visitors approaching from Tokyo Station should budget more arrival time than those using the nearer Otemachi Station route.

Do not plan an immediate visit without checking the official calendar. As verified on 28 August 2026, the museum states that it is closed for expansion and renovation and plans to reopen in autumn 2026. The published normal schedule is therefore not evidence that the galleries are currently accessible. After reopening, the calendar should still be checked because closures can occur on Mondays, around the New Year, on the Emperor's Birthday and between exhibitions. Friday access also differs because the surrounding East Gardens may be closed while the museum uses Ote-mon Gate.

Current admission is not recorded while the museum is closed for its final expansion phase. The official website lists no upcoming English-language exhibition at the time checked, so there is no reliable exhibition ticket to quote here. Recheck the museum's visitor and exhibition pages after a reopening date is announced; availability, reservation procedures and admission may depend on the exhibition. Avoid buying from an unofficial reseller or relying on a pre-closure listing. The East Gardens have their own access conditions, but garden entry does not establish whether the museum galleries are open or ticketed.

The museum is inside the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace at 1-8 Chiyoda. The official route places it about 100 metres from Ote-mon Gate, approximately five minutes on foot from Exit C13a of Otemachi Station and about fifteen minutes from Tokyo Station's Marunouchi North Exit. Hirakawa-mon and Kita-Hanebashi-mon offer alternative approaches from Takebashi Station when those garden gates are open. Motor vehicles and bicycles are not allowed into the East Gardens, and the museum provides neither car nor bicycle parking. Allow additional time for the bag screening at the entrance.

The decisive issue is the temporary closure: the operator, not an old map schedule, should determine whether a visit is possible. On Fridays the wider East Gardens are closed under their normal pattern, but the museum may use Ote-mon Gate when operating. Other garden gates can also close on Mondays, Fridays or outside garden hours. Bags are screened, and no vehicles or bicycles may enter the gardens. Exhibition gaps can create additional closed periods. Check both the museum calendar and the Imperial Household Agency's East Gardens calendar shortly before travel, because access to the grounds and access to the galleries are related but not identical.

A comprehensive post-renovation photography policy is not recorded on the official English pages reviewed. The collection includes fragile calligraphy, paintings, lacquer, metalwork and loan-sensitive exhibition material, so permission should be checked for each gallery after reopening rather than inferred from the palace garden setting. Follow exhibition signs and staff directions, and do not assume that flash, tripods, video or reproduction for publication is allowed. Outside the building, remember that the museum stands within controlled Imperial Palace grounds; comply with security instructions and avoid blocking screened entrances while photographing any permitted exterior view.
