Malaysia is one country in two pieces, and the South China Sea between them is a flight rather than a drive. Peninsular Malaysia holds Kuala Lumpur, the administrative capital at Putrajaya and most of the 34,374,300 people the 2026 estimate counts; East Malaysia is the Malaysian share of Borneo, and it is where the rainforest is. Thirteen states and three federal territories share 330,803 km2. Malaysia is one of 17 megadiverse countries, and since most of that lives on the Borneo side, planning a trip here means deciding which half of the country the week belongs to.

The PETRONAS Twin Towers are two 88-storey office towers at the eastern edge of central Kuala Lumpur, each measuring 452 metres from ground to the tip of its pinnacle, and joined near their middle by a double-decker bridge.
Menara Kuala Lumpur, signed and marketed as KL Tower, is a working telecommunications and broadcasting tower that also sells a view from the top of it.
Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad stands on Jalan Raja on the eastern edge of Dataran Merdeka, and for almost all of its life it was a working office building rather than a sight to be visited.
The Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia opened in December 1998 on Jalan Lembah Perdana, on the edge of the Perdana Botanical Garden and immediately next to Masjid Negara, the national mosque.
Masjid Negara is Malaysia's national mosque, standing on Jalan Perdana in the centre of Kuala Lumpur. The mosque's own history page dates its construction to between 1963 and 27 August 1965 and puts its capacity at 15,000 worshippers.
Guan Di Temple stands at 168 Jalan Tun H.S. Lee, on the eastern edge of Kuala Lumpur's Chinatown and a short walk from the Petaling Street market arch.
Central Market — Pasar Seni in Malay, and the name the rail stations beside it still carry — stands on Jalan Hang Kasturi at the western edge of Kuala Lumpur's old commercial quarter.
Kuala Lumpur Bird Park occupies about 20.9 acres of valley terrain inside the Lake Gardens, the old park belt west of the city centre, and its operator describes the site as ten minutes' drive from the middle of Kuala Lumpur.
Thean Hou Temple is a six-tiered temple to Mazu, the Chinese sea goddess, standing on 6,758 square metres of hillside at Robson Heights, above Jalan Syed Putra and about three kilometres south of the middle of Kuala Lumpur.
