New Mosqueについて

The New Mosque at Eminönü took sixty-six years to build, most of them spent as a ruin.

Safiye Sultan — wife of Murad III and later Valide Sultan — ordered it in 1597. Work stopped after 1603 and the half-built mosque gradually fell down. In 1660 Turhan Sultan, mother of Mehmed IV, revived the project; it was completed in 1663 and inaugurated in 1665.

Three architects saw it through. Davut Ağa, an apprentice of Sinan, began it and died in 1599; Dalgıç Ahmed Çavuş replaced him; Mustafa Ağa finished it sixty years later. It stands on the Golden Horn at the southern end of the Galata Bridge, and it is the first thing most people see coming off a ferry.

A dome 36 m high, a tomb holding seven sultans' worth of family, and a market that most visitors meet without realising it belongs to the mosque.

The külliye included a large L-shaped market building, and it survives today as the Spice Bazaar — the Mısır Çarşısı. A mosque foundation was funded by its commercial endowments, and here the endowment is still trading four centuries later.

The mausoleum holds Turhan Hatice, the Valide Sultan who finished the mosque, her son Mehmed IV, and five later sultans.

A Hünkâr Kasrı — the sultan's private lounge, reached by its own ramp — is attached to the building, as at the other imperial mosques of the period.

Forty-five minutes for the mosque and the tomb, and as long again if you go into the Spice Bazaar next door.

The prayer hall is a half-hour visit. The mausoleum outside takes fifteen minutes when it is open. The bazaar is a separate errand.

Eminönü is the ferry hub, so this mosque is the natural start or end of a Bosphorus or Golden Horn crossing rather than a destination on its own.

Between prayers, and early if you want the square outside to be walkable.

Eminönü is one of the busiest transport interchanges in the city — ferries, trams, buses and the Galata Bridge all meet at the mosque steps — and the crowd outside is heavier than the crowd inside at almost every hour.

Friday around noon is the closure to avoid. Spring and autumn are the comfortable seasons; the waterfront is exposed in winter wind.

Free. It is a working mosque and admission costs nothing.

The mausoleum is not separately ticketed on the sources this page uses, though it keeps its own hours.

The Spice Bazaar, which belongs to the same foundation, is a market with free entry and no fixed prices inside. New Mosque also earns time in a istanbul itinerary because Exact production identity relation/7574356 is assigned through pois.city_place_id; stored production name and coordinates were copied without approximation. Its value becomes clearer when the stop is compared with the surrounding streets and the other ranked places nearby.

行き方

Eminönü, on the Golden Horn at the southern end of the Galata Bridge.

The T1 tram stops at Eminönü directly outside. Ferries to Üsküdar, Kadıköy, Karaköy and up the Bosphorus leave from the piers a hundred metres away. The Spice Bazaar entrance is beside the mosque.

One contactless card covers tram, metro, funicular, bus and ferry, and it is the only ticket most visitors need.

気をつけるべきこと

Shoulders and knees covered, headscarf for women, shoes off at the threshold. Coverings are usually available at the door.

Visitor access closes during the five daily prayers and Friday around noon is the busiest hour of the week. Prayer times shift through the year.

Photography of people at prayer is not acceptable.

Eminönü's square is one of the densest crowds in Istanbul and behaves like any transport interchange with respect to pickpocketing.

The pigeon-feed sellers and the approach economy on the mosque steps are persistent. The mosque itself charges nothing for anything.

The mausoleum keeps hours that are not the mosque's and is often shut.

The mosque from the Galata Bridge, with ferries crossing in front of it, is the Eminönü photograph — and it is best in the last hour of light, when the sun comes down the Golden Horn behind Galata.

From the water, on any Üsküdar or Kadıköy ferry, the whole complex sits below Süleymaniye on the hill, which is the frame that shows how the city stacks.

Inside, the hall is well lit and the tiles are at gallery level rather than at eye level, which makes a longer lens more useful than a wide one.

Not during prayer, and not pointed at people praying.
