National Palaces Painting Museum

The National Palaces Painting Museum occupies the Crown Prince's Quarters of Dolmabahçe Palace, the wing built in the reign of Sultan Abdülmecid for the heir to the throne. Several Ottoman sultans and princes lived in it while they were waiting to inherit, which gives the building a particular flavour: these are the rooms of the man who was next, hung with the pictures his family bought.

The collection inside is presented by its operator as Turkey's first Western-style painting collection and the record of how that taste developed at the Ottoman court. The building had an earlier museum life too — it housed the Istanbul Painting and Sculpture Museum, founded in 1937 at Atatürk's direction as part of Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University. It was restored between 2010 and 2014 and opened in its present form on 22 March 2014.

553 works, spanning the sixteenth to the twentieth century, laid out across 34 thematic sections. That density is the character of the place: rather than one long chronological march, the galleries are grouped by subject and by hand, with rooms given to individual sultans, to Osman Hamdi Bey and to Ivan Ayvazovski, and others built around themes such as Turkish bath culture, the Ottoman navy and Eastern subjects.

The single largest object is what the operator describes as Turkey's largest Orientalist painting, by Félix-Auguste Clément. Around it the names that recur are the ones that define late Ottoman painting on both sides of the court: Şeker Ahmed Pasha, Hüseyin Zekai Pasha, Hoca Ali Rıza and Abdülmecid II among the Ottoman painters, and the court painters brought in from Europe — Stanisław Chlebowski, who served Abdülaziz, and Fausto Zonaro, who served Abdülhamid II. Ayvazovski, the Russian marine painter, is present in strength, which makes sense in a palace whose windows open onto the Bosphorus.

Ninety minutes. That figure rests on the size of the building and the number of galleries rather than on any published audio-guide length, and it works out at well under three minutes a section — which is the right pace here, because the thematic rooms are small and several are read in a glance.

Ninety minutes is enough to walk every section unhurried and to stop properly at perhaps a dozen canvases. It is not enough to read every label, and anyone who wants to do that should know in advance that they are choosing between coverage and depth. If your time is tight, the sections built around a single painter reward a slow pass more than the thematic groupings do.

The National Palaces Administration publishes 09:00 to 17:00 for this location, with Monday as the closed day. That 17:00 is the ticket office's closing time — the last moment a visitor can enter — rather than the moment the galleries empty, so arriving at a quarter to five buys you a ticket and very little else. No midday break is named, and no separate summer and winter schedules are published: the single window applies year round.

The operator also lists closures on New Year's Day and on the first days of the Ramadan and Sacrifice holidays, whose dates move each year.

Worth knowing: the National Palaces homepage banner shows a slightly later closing time than this museum's own location page. The location page is the specific surface and is the one this guide follows. Arrive before three in the afternoon and the difference never matters.

The operator publishes three tiers for the museum: 600 TRY for foreign visitors, 200 TRY for domestic visitors and 100 TRY reduced. Children under six enter free and a student discount applies between the ages of seven and twenty-five. Weapons are prohibited.

The trap is the garden ticket, which is a different and cheaper product entirely — 150 TRY foreign, 100 TRY domestic, 50 TRY reduced — and admits you to the grounds, not to the paintings. Ask for the museum by name at the window.

Two further cautions. This is not the same ticket as Dolmabahçe Palace itself, so a palace ticket bought earlier in the day does not carry you into these galleries. And search results still circulating figures in the tens of lira are stale aggregator copies of prices from years ago; the operator's own page is the only one worth reading on this.

The address is Vişnezade Mahallesi, Dolmabahçe Caddesi, within the Dolmabahçe Palace grounds in Beşiktaş, on the European shore where the Bosphorus opens out. The T1 tram terminates at Kabataş, from which the palace gates are a level walk of a few minutes north along the shore road — the flattest approach in a city that offers few of them.

From Taksim, the F1 funicular drops to Kabataş in under two minutes and joins the same walk. Ferries to Beşiktaş from Üsküdar and Kadıköy land a little north of the palace, leaving a walk of roughly ten minutes south along Dolmabahçe Caddesi with the water on your left.

Once inside the grounds, the museum is in the Crown Prince's Quarters rather than in the main palace block, so follow the signage for the Resim Müzesi and do not join the queue at the state apartments, which is a different entrance for a different ticket.

The commonest wasted afternoon here comes from treating the 17:00 figure as a closing time for the galleries. It is when the ticket office shuts, so it is the last entry, and a visit needing ninety minutes has to start well before it. Plan to be at the window by half past three at the latest.

The second is the ticket confusion described above: garden and museum are separate products at separate prices, and the palace is a third. Buy deliberately.

Monday is closed, and Monday closure catches people who have built a Beşiktaş day around the palace and assumed the whole complex keeps one schedule. Check the day before you leave the hotel.

Finally, the 34 sections are spread through a residential building rather than a purpose-built gallery, which means narrow doorways, stairs between levels and rooms that fill quickly when a group arrives. If a tour party enters behind you, skip forward two rooms and let it pass rather than shuffling in its wake.

The operator's page does not publish a photography rule for this museum, so ask at the ticket desk rather than assuming; the answer in palace properties is often that handheld cameras are fine and tripods are not, but that is a general expectation and not a published permission for this building.

If you may shoot, the problem is glass. A large share of the canvases are glazed and hung in rooms with tall windows onto the Bosphorus, which puts a bright rectangle across the middle of almost every frame. Move until the reflection sits outside the picture area, shoot from a slight angle rather than square on, and accept the small keystone that costs you.

The better photographs here are often not of the paintings at all. The Crown Prince's Quarters is a nineteenth-century palace interior, and the ceilings, the door enfilades and the window light falling across a parquet floor make pictures that no reproduction of the canvases can. Look up.
