Museum Gazhaneについて

Müze Gazhane is the Hasanpaşa gasworks, turned into a public culture campus. Construction began on 1 August 1891 under the architect-contractor Guglielmo Semprini and the plant opened in 1892, built to make coal gas for the street and indoor lighting of Kadıköy, Üsküdar and the rest of the Anatolian side. The concession went to an Ottoman incorporated company trading as Lighting with Gas and Electricity, developed by the Paris iron industrialist Charles Georges and represented locally by the engineer Anatoli Barcil.

It changed hands as the city changed. The Üsküdar-Kadıköy gas lighting company ran it from 1892 to 1926, an Istanbul gas and electricity concern from 1926 to 1938, and İETT — the municipal tram, electricity and funicular authority — from 1944 until it closed on 13 June 1993.

Then it was nearly lost. A demolition attempt in 1994 was stopped by local resistance, and from 1996 a neighbourhood group calling itself the Gasworks Environmental Volunteers kept the site in the public eye, running eight festivals on it through to 2009. Istanbul Technical University prepared restoration plans between 1998 and 2001; the conservation board approved them in 2014; renovation ran from March 2014 to 2021, and the site opened as Müze Gazhane on 9 July 2021 under the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality.

This is a campus rather than a museum, roughly 32,000 square metres of restored industrial buildings arranged around an open square, and the exhibition venues are separate free-standing halls you walk between in the open air.

Four of them carry the museum programme. The İklim Müzesi is a climate museum; the Karikatür ve Mizah Müzesi is devoted to cartoon and humour, a genuinely Turkish speciality with a long satirical-magazine tradition behind it; the Çocuk Bilim Merkezi is a hands-on children's science centre; and Galeri Gazhane carries temporary exhibitions. The P and L halls take larger shows and hired events.

Around them sits everything that makes people stay. The Afife Batur library holds some ten thousand volumes and is open around the clock, with a quiet study area alongside it. Two theatres seat three hundred and one hundred and thirty. There is an İstanbul Kitapçısı bookshop, a Beltur café-restaurant, and the square itself, which functions as neighbourhood public space in its own right and keeps longer hours than any of the museums.

The industrial fabric is the exhibit that frames all of them: brick halls, iron, and the plan of a nineteenth-century gasworks left legible instead of erased.

Two and a half hours is the figure recorded here and it assumes you do the whole campus at a normal pace: the four exhibition venues, plus the walking between them across the square, which is not trivial on a site of this size.

Scale it to intent. A visitor who has come for the cartoon museum alone, or only for the climate museum, needs well under an hour and should not block out an afternoon. A family that turns the children's science centre loose will comfortably exceed two and a half hours and then want the café, and should plan for most of a day.

The library, the bookshop and the square are open far longer than the exhibition halls, so the campus absorbs extra time easily at either end of a museum visit. That is a feature — it is one of the few cultural sites in the city where lingering costs nothing and there is somewhere to sit.

The four museum venues run 10:00 to 18:00 and are closed on Monday, according to the operator's own visiting page. Everything else keeps its own hours: Gazhane Meydanı, the square, is open 09:00 to 22:00 every day including Monday; the Beltur café-restaurant 10:00 to 22:00; the İstanbul Kitapçısı bookshop 11:00 to 22:00; and the Afife Batur library and the sound study area are listed as open seven days a week, twenty-four hours a day.

One caution on the opening hour. A second page on the operator's own site gives the same four venues as opening at 09:00 rather than 10:00, Tuesday through Sunday. The two pages agree that Monday is the closed day and that closing is at 18:00, and they differ only on when the doors open. This guide follows the dedicated visiting page and records 10:00; a visitor who turns up at nine may find the halls still shut. Neither page publishes any summer or winter variation.

Practically, that makes Monday evening on the square a real option even though the museums are dark, and it makes a late-morning weekday arrival the best single choice for the exhibitions.

No admission price is published for Müze Gazhane, and none is recorded here. That deserves an explanation rather than a shrug, because the absence is unusually well documented.

The operator is the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. Its 2026 fee tariff for the libraries and museums directorate does contain a Müze Gazhane section — and that section holds only venue-hire and filming lines: exhibition rental of the P and L buildings, short-term event use, commercial and programme filming, cinema shoots. There is no visitor admission line at all. The same tariff prints explicit admission charges for other municipal museums, naming full, student and foreign rates for the Tekfur Sarayı museum and listing the Hisar and Haliç art museums.

A schedule that itemises admission elsewhere and omits it here is strong evidence that the Gazhane venues take no ticket. But that is an inference from silence rather than a published statement of free entry, so this guide records nothing and says so plainly. Third-party pages advertising discounted student and teacher rates for the site exist and were deliberately not used. Budget for the café and the bookshop; treat entry as unpriced until the operator prices it.

行き方

The site is in Hasanpaşa, inland from Kadıköy, and the operator publishes four routes to it.

By metro, take the Kadıköy–Tavşantepe line and get off at Acıbadem. By Marmaray, get off at Söğütlüçeşme and walk about five minutes. The metrobüs also stops at Söğütlüçeşme, from which it is the same five-minute walk. By bus, the 8A from the Kadıköy ferry pier stops at Hasanpaşa.

For most visitors arriving from the European side, the Marmaray is the obvious answer: it runs under the Bosphorus and puts you a short walk from the gate without a change. The romantic answer is the ferry to Kadıköy and the 8A up from the pier, which costs more time and gives you the crossing.

Once you are in the neighbourhood the campus is easy to find — it is a walled industrial site of 32,000 square metres in the middle of ordinary apartment blocks, and there is nothing else it could be.

気をつけるべきこと

The opening-hour disagreement is the first thing. Two pages on the operator's own website give the museum venues as opening at 10:00 and at 09:00 respectively, and this guide follows the dedicated visiting page. Do not plan a nine o'clock arrival on the strength of the other page; go at ten and lose nothing.

The second is Monday. The square, the library and the café are open, the four museums are not, and because the site looks fully alive on a Monday evening it is easy to travel out here and discover the halls are dark. If the museums are the point, do not come on a Monday.

The third is scale creep. People arrive planning a quick look at the cartoon museum and leave three hours later, because the venues are separate buildings with a square, a bookshop and a café between them. Build the slack in rather than being surprised by it.

Finally, this is a restored industrial plant, not a smoothed-over gallery. Expect open ground between buildings, hard surfaces underfoot and outdoor walking between every venue — which also means weather matters here in a way it does not at a single-building museum. Rain turns the campus into a series of dashes.

The architecture is the picture, and it is the opposite problem from a dim Byzantine interior: this is a big, open, hard-edged site with plenty of light and the difficulty is composition rather than exposure.

The restored brick halls are the strongest subject. Shoot them from across the square so the full mass reads, and use the industrial repetition — window bays, iron members, the rhythm of the roofline — as the structure of the frame rather than hunting for a single focal object. Standing close and shooting up a façade exaggerates the height and usually flatters these buildings.

Light works in your favour late. The square is open until 22:00 while the museums shut at 18:00, so the best hour for photographing the campus is one you can only use after the exhibitions close — go round the venues first, then stay for the low sun and the lit façades afterwards. It is one of the few sites in the city where the schedule hands you the golden hour for free.

Inside, the children's science centre and the cartoon museum are lively and full of people; ask before photographing other visitors' children, which on this site means most of them.
