Cemberlitas Hammamについて

Çemberlitaş Hamamı is not a monument you look at. It is a bath that has been in use since 1584 and is still in use tonight, and a visit means undressing, being washed by a stranger on a hot marble slab, and walking back out into Divanyolu with your hair wet.

Nurbanu Sultan, the head of the imperial harem, commissioned it in 1584 after the death of her husband Selim II, funding it from the enlarged stipend she drew as mother of the reigning sultan. The attribution to Mimar Sinan is more qualified than the brochures suggest: Sinan's five-volume autobiography names this hamam only once, in the final volume, unlike the projects he lists throughout, and it was most likely built by the team of architects working under him with little direct supervision.

It stands beside the Column of Constantine, the burnt stone that gives the district its name.

The plan is the classical one and you move through it in order: the söğüklük, the cool dressing room where the changing cabins are; the ılıklık, the warm room that acclimatises you; and the sıcaklık, the hot chamber where the work happens. The hot room has twelve columns and, at its centre, the göbek taşı, the raised marble platform you lie on while the heat does its part before the attendant arrives.

The heat itself comes from below. A furnace drives hot air through hollow foundations, a system inherited directly from Roman practice, which is why the floor is warm underfoot rather than the air being merely humid.

It was built as a çifte hamam, a double bath with mirrored men's and women's halves. The men's entrance carried a gold thuluth inscription on a green ground praising Nurbanu Sultan; the women's entrance was left undecorated, deliberately, to preserve the women's modesty.

見学時間の目安

Ninety minutes, door to door. The operator sells the classic hamam entrance with no time limit, so the figure is not imposed by the house; it is what the sequence actually takes.

Count it out: undressing and stowing your things in the cabin; ten or fifteen minutes lying on the göbek taşı until the heat has properly reached you, because a kese on cold skin is unpleasant and ineffective; the fifteen-minute scrub and soap-foam wash if you have taken the most-chosen package; the rinse; and then the cooling room, which is not an optional extra. Leaving a hamam at full temperature into a cold street is the one reliable way to feel worse than when you arrived.

Take the luxury package with its thirty-minute oil massage and the visit runs comfortably beyond ninety minutes. Plan nothing sharp-edged for the hour afterwards.

季節と混雑状況

The operator states one schedule and no closed day: open daily from 06:00 to midnight. That is unusually generous for a historic site in Istanbul and it is the whole trick to visiting well, because the hamam has no peak hour you are forced into.

Six in the morning is a real option and the quietest hour there is. The other good window is late, after the day's tour groups have gone back to their hotels. Mid-afternoon is when a bath a few steps from the Grand Bazaar is at its busiest.

Winter is the season this building was designed for. A hot room is a luxury in February and merely warm in August, though the cool room does its best work the other way round.

One practical note on timing rather than hours: do not come straight from a heavy meal, and do not book a bath immediately before somewhere you must look presentable.

The operator publishes every package in both currencies. The classic hamam entrance is 2900 TL or 57 EUR and carries no time limit. The most-chosen option, body scrub and bubble wash, is 3650 TL or 72 EUR and adds a fifteen-minute kese and soap-foam wash. The luxury package with a thirty-minute aromatherapy oil massage is 4700 TL or 92 EUR, and the VIP Plus is 7750 TL or 152 EUR. Single massages, whether full-body oil, Indian head or foot, are 4200 TL or 82 EUR each.

Beauty extras are priced separately: face mask 600 TL, manicure 900 TL, pedicure 1000 TL, waxing on request.

Towel, soap, shampoo, slippers and the changing cabin are included in every price, so you need bring nothing. What is not published anywhere on the operator's own pages is a tipping policy, so treat any expectation you meet at the door as informal rather than as a fixed charge.

行き方

This is the easiest arrival of any historic building in Istanbul. The T1 tram has a stop called Çemberlitaş, and the hamam is beside it, on Divanyolu, at the foot of the Column of Constantine, the tall banded stone column you cannot miss and which the district is named after.

On foot it sits almost exactly between Sultanahmet and the Grand Bazaar, a few minutes' walk from either, which is why so many people end a day at the bazaar here. Coming from Eminönü the tram is two or three stops uphill; coming from Sultanahmet, walking is quicker than waiting.

Because it is open from six in the morning until midnight, unlike almost everything else nearby, it also works as the thing you do when the museums have shut and you are still in Fatih with an evening to spend.

気をつけるべきこと

You will undress here, and that changes what matters. The operator's own price page does not state how men and women are separated today. Wikipedia records that the building was a double bath and that nineteenth-century street widening demolished part of it and forced the closure of the women's section, so if the arrangement matters to you, ask at the desk before you pay rather than after you have changed.

Everything is wet marble. The slippers are provided for a reason: walk flat-footed, do not hurry, and take rings and watches off in the cabin rather than on a slick floor. Leave valuables in the changing cabin, which is included in every package.

Do not shave or wax on the day of a kese; the scrub is abrasive by design and freshly shaved skin will not thank you. Drink water before and after. Contact lenses and a steam room are a poor combination.

And allow yourself to be limp for half an hour afterwards. That is the point, not a side effect.

The single best photograph in this building is one you should not take. The dome of the hot room is pierced with star-shaped openings that drop shafts of light onto the göbek taşı through the steam, and the göbek taşı has undressed strangers lying on it. A camera has no business in the sıcaklık, whatever the desk may or may not permit, and the ordinary courtesy of a bath outranks any picture.

There is also a mechanical reason. Steam at bath temperature will get inside a phone, and glass fogs the moment it enters the hot room; a lens that has been sitting in a warm cabin will not clear for several minutes.

Shoot the exterior instead. The entrance on Divanyolu with the Column of Constantine behind it is the honest establishing shot, and you can ask at the desk before pointing anything at the söğüklük. Then put the phone in the cabin and leave it there.
