The Liechtenstein City Palace (Stadtpalais Liechtenstein) is a Baroque town palace at Bankgasse 9 in Vienna's first district, built in stages from the late 17th into the early 18th century as the winter town residence of the princely House of Liechtenstein, distinct from the family's larger Garden Palace (Gartenpalais) in the Alsergrund district, which houses a separate art collection.

Domenico Martinelli directed the main building campaign around 1694 to 1706, working for Prince Johann Adam Andreas I of Liechtenstein, whose wealth from Moravian and Silesian estates funded a building programme that also produced the family's Vienna garden palace and the Feldsberg estate across the border.

The House of Liechtenstein still holds title to the palace today; it is used for the family's and the principality's ceremonial and representative functions rather than as a public museum, which is the key difference from the Gartenpalais, whose picture gallery is the family's publicly shown collection.

This palace should not be confused with the Liechtenstein Garden Palace (Gartenpalais Liechtenstein) in the Alsergrund district, a separate building entirely, which holds the family's picture gallery and does run regular public opening hours; the Bankgasse building covered here is the family's older winter town residence and carries no public collection of its own.

Bankgasse 9 sits behind the Hofburg and Ballhausplatz, a short walk from Herrengasse U-Bahn station on the U3 line and from the Rathausplatz tram stop served by lines 1, 2, 37, 38, 40, 41 and 42, both roughly five to seven minutes away on foot. The street is quiet, residential-feeling despite its central location, and carries little pedestrian traffic compared with the Ringstrasse.

気をつけるべきこと

The palace is easy to confuse with the Liechtenstein Garden Palace in Alsergrund, which does hold a public art collection and public opening hours — arriving at Bankgasse expecting the picture gallery is the single most common mistake to avoid, since the two buildings belong to the same family but serve entirely different functions.

Without a pre-arranged visit, there is nothing to enter at Bankgasse 9 beyond viewing the exterior from the street.
