The Jewish Museum Vienna interprets Jewish religion, culture and life in Vienna through two complementary central-city locations. Its institutional history reaches back to 1895, when Vienna's first Jewish museum was founded as the first museum of its kind in the world. The present city museum was established in 1988 and opened in temporary premises in 1990. Palais Eskeles at Dorotheergasse 11 became its principal home in 1993. A second branch opened at Judenplatz in 2000 beside the excavated medieval synagogue and Rachel Whiteread's memorial to the Austrian Jewish victims of the Shoah. This POI refers to the Dorotheergasse location.

Dorotheergasse houses the permanent exhibition Our City! Jewish Vienna - Then to Now. The ground floor begins with Jewish life from 1945 to the present; the second floor looks backward from the modern period through the community's earlier history and the Shoah. Visible Storage brings together surviving material from the original museum, holdings of the Jewish Community of Vienna and the Berger, Schlaff and Stern collections. The Atelier explains holidays, family practices and everyday religious life through objects and participatory interpretation. Temporary exhibitions add contemporary artists and focused historical subjects, while the separate Judenplatz branch concentrates on medieval Vienna.

The museum does not prescribe a standard visit duration on the official pages reviewed. For Dorotheergasse alone, allow enough time to follow Our City! across its modern and historical levels and to examine Visible Storage rather than treating it as a single display case. A visit that includes a current temporary exhibition will take longer. The combined ticket can also be used at Judenplatz, seven minutes away on foot, but the two locations address different periods and are better treated as two museum visits rather than one continuous room sequence. Check closing times before starting the second branch.

The official visitor page currently lists Dorotheergasse from Sunday through Friday, 10:00 to 18:00, with Saturday closed. Verify the date before travel because Jewish holidays, special events and exhibition installation can create additional changes. The museum's home page posts exceptional closures and early closing notices, making it more reliable than an undated directory. If visiting both branches, note that Judenplatz has a shorter Friday schedule even though the locations are only seven minutes apart. Arrive with enough margin to complete the permanent exhibition rather than entering immediately before the last usable hour.

The official museum ticket covers Dorotheergasse and Judenplatz and remains valid for both locations over seven days. This guide does not duplicate the current price because no maintained editorial admission row is attached to the POI; use the museum's ticket page for the amount and reduced categories in force on the visit date. Guided tours require separate arrangements, and public-tour capacity can be limited. Keep the ticket after leaving the first branch if you intend to use the second visit later in the week. Museum Judenplatz is not simply another entrance to the same building.

行き方

Museum Dorotheergasse is at Dorotheergasse 11 in Vienna's first district. The operator recommends public transport and identifies Stephansplatz station, served by the U1 and U3 underground lines, as the convenient approach. From Stephansplatz the museum is reached on foot through the compact historic centre. Do not navigate to Judenplatz 8 by mistake: that is the museum's medieval-history branch, reached more directly from Herrengasse station on the U3. The two museums are about seven minutes apart on foot, so their distinct addresses should be saved before beginning a combined visit.

The most common planning error is treating the two museum locations as interchangeable. Dorotheergasse presents Jewish Vienna from the present backward through history; Judenplatz focuses on the medieval community and archaeological remains. Their Friday hours differ, and both are normally closed on Saturdays. Current temporary exhibitions can also alter which material is available. The displays address persecution, the destruction of Vienna's Jewish community and antisemitic imagery as well as religious and everyday life, so some rooms are emotionally demanding. Follow gallery guidance and allow space for other visitors rather than rushing through sensitive material to reach the second location.
