Pillar of Shame was an eight-metre memorial sculpture by Danish artist Jens Galschiøt, created as part of a series confronting major abuses of humanity. The Hong Kong work showed more than fifty distorted human figures compressed into a vertical column. It was unveiled during the 4 June 1997 candlelight commemoration in Victoria Park and subsequently became closely associated with public remembrance of the 1989 Tiananmen crackdown in Hong Kong. The sculpture carried bilingual inscriptions referring directly to the massacre and the date 4 June 1989.
