The Cinema Museum is a registered charity in Kennington, South London, dedicated to cinema and the history of cinemagoing. It occupies part of the former Lambeth Workhouse, the institution Charlie Chaplin entered as a child when his mother faced destitution. The museum preserves artefacts, equipment, films and social history connected with the experience of going to the pictures. Its official description also presents the historic premises as a venue for screenings and other cinema-related programmes. This identity belongs to the museum and its collection, not to a commercial multiplex or to the whole surviving Lambeth Workhouse complex.

The collection documents going to the pictures from the 1890s to the present. The operator lists more than one million publicity photographs, plus posters and original poster artwork; safety film in multiple gauges, including adverts, trailers, B-films, newsreels and home movies; early projectors, sound systems and arc lamps; cinema uniforms from the 1930s to the 1950s; picture-palace seats and signs; and fan and trade publications. The collection page shows only a glimpse of this material and explicitly warns that every pictured object cannot be guaranteed on display. A guided tour is therefore an encounter with selected collection material, not a promise that each online example will be visible.

Allow approximately two hours for a standard museum tour. The Cinema Museum publishes that duration directly and says it includes about thirty minutes of short films. This is the appropriate visit length for the collection, replacing the page's former category-default estimate. Arrive for the exact time on the booked tour listing; the museum has no separate all-day opening period in which to extend the visit independently. A screening, talk, book launch or other scheduled event can run for a different length and should be timed from its own listing. Research appointments and dedicated group tours are also separately arranged and should not be treated as ordinary two-hour public tours.

The Cinema Museum does not have regular public opening hours. The collection is available through pre-booked guided tours, while screenings, talks and other events follow the separate dates and times in the event calendar. The museum aims to run two tours on many Saturdays, one in the morning and one in the early afternoon, but exceptional Saturdays can lose one or both tours when another event uses the venue. Check the current tour schedule and book the exact session rather than assuming a weekly Saturday opening. An event ticket admits its named programme; it does not establish general collection-viewing hours before or after the event unless the listing says so.

A standard guided museum tour costs £15 for adults. The £12 concession applies to people under 18, people aged 65 and over, students, and people on a low income who receive state benefits; a carer needed to accompany a visitor is admitted free. Advance online booking is the reliable way to secure a place. The museum says unbooked visitors may sometimes join a tour about to begin, but availability is not guaranteed. Scheduled screenings, talks and other events use their own listed prices and booking providers, so a tour ticket is not an event ticket. The museum currently offers no general walk-in admission product because the collection cannot be viewed without a booking.

The Cinema Museum is at 2 Dugard Way, off Renfrew Road, London SE11 4TH. The operator places it in Kennington, South London, close to Elephant and Castle. Use the full museum name and Dugard Way in navigation rather than searching only for a cinema in Lambeth, which can point to a commercial screening venue. Cycle parking is provided. Car parking is limited and available only by arrangement, and the museum lies within the Congestion Charging zone. The official visit page does not publish a preferred Underground exit, walking time or bus route, so check current Transport for London journey information for the booked tour or event and allow enough time to reach the entrance before the stated start.

Do not arrive expecting an independently browsable museum. The visit page states that the collection cannot currently be viewed without booking a guided tour. It publishes separate contact routes for guided visits, archive research and private venue hire. The museum also says three cats named Garbo, Marble and Jimmy share the building. Visitors with an allergy or another concern about the resident animals should contact the museum before booking. A confirmed tour grants access only under that booking's instructions; it does not create general entry to collection stores or working areas. Check the visit page again before travelling because the museum does not publish regular walk-in hours.

Do not infer permission to photograph collection objects, archival material, screenings or other guests from the images on the museum website or from the building's availability for commercial location hire.
