At roughly 995 hectares, the Bois de Vincennes is the largest public park inside Paris, wrapping the eastern edge of the 12th arrondissement.

Like its western counterpart the Bois de Boulogne, it began as a royal hunting forest tied to the Château de Vincennes at its northern corner, and Napoleon III had it landscaped into an English-style public park in the 1860s, under the same Alphand-led programme that reshaped Paris's parks during Haussmann's rebuilding of the city.

Its scale sets it apart from the smaller central gardens: several separate attractions sit inside it rather than one continuous landscape, and a single visit rarely covers more than one or two of them.

The wood's size makes it easy to underestimate walking distances between its attractions — the zoo and the racecourse, in particular, sit well apart from the lakes near the western entrances.

As with the Bois de Boulogne, parts of the wood are quiet and poorly lit after dark, which is worth planning around for an evening visit. The zoo and the Parc Floral both keep seasonal opening times separate from the wood's own always-open status, so checking those specifically before travelling avoids arriving to a closed gate.

Lac Daumesnil with its wooded islands and footbridges is the wood's most photographed corner, especially from the boat-hire jetty in early morning light.

The zoo's Grand Rocher, the 65 m artificial cliff dating from the 1934 opening, is a distinctive subject unlike anything else in the park system and photographs well from the paths around its base. The Parc Floral's seasonal beds are best timed to spring for colour and to the summer concert season for atmosphere, and the footbridges over Lac Daumesnil's islands give a reliable vantage point back toward the water at any time of day.
