Palais Esterhazy is a Baroque town palace on Wallnerstrasse in Vienna's Innere Stadt, built in stages from the late seventeenth century and given its present facade in a 1720s remodelling by architect Anton Ospel for the Esterhazy family, one of the wealthiest aristocratic houses of the Habsburg empire. It served as the family's Vienna townhouse for the social season, distinct from their main seat at Eszterhaza in what is now Hungary and their Eisenstadt residence, where the composer Joseph Haydn spent most of his career as the family's court musician; Haydn's own connection is chiefly to those two seats rather than to this Vienna building, and describing the Wallnerstrasse palace as a 'Haydn site' overstates a link the historical record does not support. The family kept the townhouse through the nineteenth century as its Vienna base during the parliamentary and court season, when the aristocracy moved between country seats and the capital. Wallnerstrasse itself sat at the centre of Vienna's aristocratic town-palace district, within a short walk of several other family seats including Palais Harrach and Palais Kinsky, and Esterhazy's position there reflected the family's standing among that same circle of court nobility.

The upper floors remain private and administrative space, not open to visitors. The building's public-facing feature is the Esterhazykeller, a wine cellar restaurant occupying the palace's original vaulted basement storage cellars, run as a separate hospitality business under lease rather than as part of a palace tour; walking down into the cellar to eat or drink there is the one way an ordinary visitor experiences any part of the building's interior. The cellar's vaulting is original to the palace's storage function and is one of the older intact interior spaces still accessible in the building, and the restaurant's own presentation of the space leans on that continuity of use rather than on any restoration or reconstruction.

Wallnerstrasse runs between Am Hof and Herrengasse in the Innere Stadt, a three-minute walk from the Herrengasse U-Bahn station on line U3 and a similar distance from Stephansplatz on U1 and U3. It sits within the same small block as Palais Harrach and Palais Ferstel.

Confusing this Vienna town palace with the Esterhazy family's other seats, particularly Eszterhaza in Hungary where Haydn actually worked and lived, is a common and avoidable mix-up when researching the building beforehand, and travel guides that describe Wallnerstrasse itself as a Haydn concert venue are repeating that same conflation rather than a documented fact about this address. The cellar restaurant's own historical notes make the distinction explicitly, since the confusion is common enough among visiting diners that staff are used to being asked about it.

The Wallnerstrasse facade is narrow and best shot from across the street rather than close in, since the street itself is not wide enough to fit the whole front from directly opposite at close range. The cellar interior, where photography is generally tolerated by the restaurant, is dimly lit and favours a wide aperture or a steadied shot over a flash, which flattens the vaulted stonework and loses the depth the low vaulted ceiling otherwise gives a shot taken along the length of the cellar.
