Immaculate Conception Church 소개

The Immaculate Conception Church at Samsen is the oldest Catholic church in Thailand, and its history is a record of three separate refugee arrivals rather than of a single foundation. King Narai the Great granted land here to Bangkok's Portuguese community in 1674, during the Ayutthaya period, for a church of the Immaculate Conception; the Portuguese had been present in the kingdom since 1567. Construction was interrupted when Ayutthaya fell to Burmese forces, and the church was rebuilt in 1785, in 1832 and again in 1847. The building standing today is the one raised in 1847. The Thai name for the parish, Wat Khonsepchan, sits alongside two older neighbourhood names that record who rebuilt it: Bot Ban Khamen, the Cambodian village church, and Bot Ban Yuan, the Vietnamese village church.

안에 무엇이 들어있나요?

What the Immaculate Conception Church preserves is not a treasury but a lineage of communities. Its 1785 rebuilding followed the return of Portuguese traders invited back by King Rama I to stimulate trade, and was carried out with the help of Cambodian refugees fleeing civil conflict at home — the record has 500 Cambodians taking shelter at the church, which is where the name Bot Ban Khamen comes from. The 1832 rebuilding was the work of Vietnamese prisoners of war who chose to remain in Bangkok after a Thai-Vietnamese conflict, giving the second name Bot Ban Yuan. The French missionary Monsignor Pallegoix oversaw both the 1832 and the 1847 works, and the 1847 fabric is what a visitor sees. The descendants of those Eurasian, Cambodian and Vietnamese households still live in the enclave around the church.

권장 관람 시간

Half an hour is enough at the Immaculate Conception Church. This is a small parish church rather than a museum: there is a nave to sit in, a compound to walk around, and a riverside enclave of lanes immediately outside that is arguably the better half of the visit. Fifteen minutes inside and fifteen in the grounds is a fair split. Visitors who want to understand what they are looking at should add another half hour to walk the surrounding Samsen lanes, where the Portuguese-descended, Cambodian and Vietnamese settlement patterns that built the church three times over are still legible in the street layout.

계절과 군중

The Immaculate Conception Church is a working parish, not a monument with visiting hours, and the practical consequence is that a service is the wrong time to sightsee and the right time to understand the place — a visitor must choose. One dated occasion is published by the Church in Thailand: the feast of Our Lady of Ransom is celebrated at the Immaculate Conception Church of Our Lady on Thursday 24 September 2026 at 18.00, presided over by Bishop Peter Suphot Rueksucharit of Chiang Mai, with a live broadcast for those who cannot attend. Outside such occasions, a weekday late morning is the quietest window. ssmtour holds no operator-published general opening hours for the church.

티켓

ssmtour records no admission for the Immaculate Conception Church, and a parish church of this kind would not normally sell entry. No operator-published figure was found: the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Thailand site at catholic.or.th, which does publish this parish's feast-day notices, carries no entry charge for the church, and no parish website for Samsen was reachable on 25 August 2026. The admission is not stated on this page as a result. A collection is taken at Mass, and an offering box may stand inside the church; both are voluntary and are a matter for the visitor. Do not expect a ticket desk or a staffed entrance.

가는 방법

The Immaculate Conception Church stands on Soi Mitrakham in Samsen, Bangkok, in the riverside strip of Dusit district north of the old royal city. The lanes of the enclave are narrow and residential, and the church is set back from the main road, so the last part of any approach is on foot whatever the mode of arrival — a car cannot be taken to the door. Chao Phraya river boats serving the Samsen stretch put a visitor within a short walk, which is the arrival that makes the most historical sense given that the community here was a river community. Give a taxi driver the Thai parish name, Wat Khonsepchan, rather than the English one.

주의할 점

The thing to watch out for at the Immaculate Conception Church is that it belongs to the people who live around it. The compound sits inside a residential enclave whose families trace back to the Portuguese, Cambodian and Vietnamese arrivals that rebuilt the church, and the lanes are their front yards, not a heritage trail. Enter the church quietly, dress as for any Catholic church with shoulders covered, and do not walk about during Mass — sit at the back or come back later. Non-Catholics are welcome to be present but should not join the communion queue. Note that the church is easily confused with two other Bangkok churches of similar age and appearance; check the Thai name Wat Khonsepchan on arrival. ssmtour holds no confirmed hours, so a closed door is possible.

Photograph the Immaculate Conception Church from the compound rather than from the lane: the 1847 facade needs a few steps of distance and the surrounding houses press close. The interior is a modest nave lit by side windows and a wide lens plus a high ISO is the honest combination, since flash in a church that people are praying in is not acceptable. The strongest pictures here are usually not of the building at all but of the enclave — the narrow lanes, the doorways, the mixture of Thai, Portuguese-descended and Vietnamese domestic detail — and those are pictures of somebody's home, so ask. Never photograph a Mass, a baptism or a funeral without the parish's permission.
