Weltmuseum Wien occupies the Neue Burg wing of the Hofburg on Heldenplatz and holds Vienna's global ethnographic collections, assembled from Habsburg holdings and expedition material going back to the museum's founding as the Museum für Völkerkunde in 1876.

The collection includes material from Captain Cook's Pacific voyages, among the oldest Oceanic collections in Europe, alongside holdings from Africa, the Americas and Asia.

It closed for a full renovation in 2014 and reopened in October 2017 under its current name, Weltmuseum Wien, replacing the older "Museum of Ethnology" branding.

The Neue Burg wing it occupies was built as the last major addition to the Hofburg complex, completed only shortly before the First World War, and it shares the building with several of the Kunsthistorisches Museum association's other specialist collections.

That association places it alongside the main Kunsthistorisches Museum picture gallery and the Theatermuseum as one grouping of Austria's federal museums, distinct from the city-run Wien Museum group that runs the Hermesvilla.

The 2017 rehang organises the collection by region rather than purely by object type, with dedicated rooms for the Americas, Africa, East Asia, Southeast Asia and Oceania.

The Cook-Voyage collection, including Hawaiian feather cloaks and helmets among the oldest Pacific artefacts held in any European museum, anchors the Oceania rooms; other highlights include Benin bronzes, Aztec and Maya material, and Japanese and Chinese court objects drawn from Habsburg-era diplomatic gifts and acquisitions.

A dedicated Ottoman and Islamic-world room also draws on the Habsburg court's centuries of direct contact and conflict with the Ottoman Empire, giving that section a depth few ethnographic museums outside the region can match.

Two to three hours covers the permanent collection at a normal pace; a visitor combining it with the neighbouring Neue Burg collections — arms and armour, historic musical instruments — in the same wing should allow the better part of a day.

The Oceania and Americas rooms alone can hold a visitor considerably longer than the rest of the museum, given the density and rarity of the objects on display in those two sections.

Mornings on weekdays are quietest; the museum draws smaller crowds than the Kunsthistorisches Museum across the Ring, so queueing is rarely an issue at any time.

Special exhibitions run on their own separate schedule and are announced on the museum's site ahead of the permanent collection's regular calendar.

The museum tends to be busier when a temporary exhibition draws extra press coverage, so checking the current programme before a visit gives a better sense of expected crowds than the permanent collection alone would suggest.

Admission is charged and sold at the museum's own desk and online; it is part of the Kunsthistorisches Museum association and a combined ticket covering several of that group's houses is available alongside a standalone Weltmuseum ticket.

The museum sits on Heldenplatz inside the Hofburg complex, a five-minute walk from Herrengasse station on the U3 line.
