Belvedere 21 is Vienna's museum for contemporary art, housed in a steel-and-glass pavilion in the Schweizergarten, a few hundred metres south of the Baroque Belvedere palace complex it is administratively part of.

The building itself predates its current use by decades. Architect Karl Schwanzer designed it as the Austrian Pavilion for the 1958 World's Fair in Brussels, where it won a Grand Prix; afterwards it was dismantled, shipped to Vienna and rebuilt on its present site, opening in 1962 as the Museum of the 20th Century (Museum des 20. Jahrhunderts). It later housed the Museum of Modern Art (MUMOK) before that collection moved to the MuseumsQuartier in 2001, then sat closed for a decade. Architect Adolf Krischanitz renovated it and it reopened in 2011 as 21er Haus, taking its current name, Belvedere 21, in 2018.

The result is one of the few internationally significant Mid-Century Modern buildings in central Vienna, and the collection inside is Austrian and international art from after 1945, shown in changing exhibitions rather than a fixed permanent hang.

One open pavilion floor plan, raised above ground level and largely glazed on all sides, plus a sculpture garden (Skulpturengarten) on the grounds around it. There is no fixed permanent-collection route to follow — the museum programmes changing solo and thematic exhibitions of Austrian post-1945 and contemporary art, so what fills the space changes several times a year.

A lower level added during the 2011 Krischanitz renovation carries a study collection and archive space, dug into the site rather than visible from outside, and not always open to casual visitors on the same schedule as the main pavilion floor above it. This is also where the building differs most from what most first-time visitors expect: the Klimt paintings and the rest of the historical Belvedere collection stay in the Upper Belvedere across town, and Belvedere 21 shows nothing from that collection, only contemporary work.

The sculpture garden outside holds works by Austrian sculptors including Fritz Wotruba, whose blocky, monumental abstract stone forms sit directly on the lawn rather than on plinths, and is free to walk through even outside the pavilion's opening hours, since it forms part of the surrounding Schweizergarten public park rather than the ticketed museum itself.

An hour to ninety minutes for the current exhibition, longer if a temporary show spans the full floor. The sculpture garden adds twenty minutes and needs no ticket.

Because the programme rotates, the length of a visit depends on how much of the pavilion the current exhibition occupies — a single large installation can be seen faster than several smaller shows sharing the floor.

Belvedere 21 draws far fewer visitors than the Baroque Belvedere palaces nearby, so crowding is rarely the reason to time a visit; the exhibition calendar is. Check which show is running before travelling out to the Schweizergarten, since the pavilion is a detour from the main museum cluster around the Ring.

Belvedere 21 is ticketed separately from the Upper and Lower Belvedere, though combined tickets covering more than one site are sometimes sold. Current admission prices and the exact weekly closing day are not reproduced here; confirm both on the Belvedere website before travelling, since museum closing days in Vienna commonly fall on a Monday.

In the Schweizergarten, Landstraße, on the south side of the Hauptbahnhof area, a walk of about ten minutes from Vienna's main railway station, Wien Hauptbahnhof. Tram D stops near the Hauptbahnhof and several bus routes serve the Schweizergarten; the Upper and Lower Belvedere are a fifteen-minute walk north.

주의할 점

The pavilion is easy to miss on a map because it reads as a park building rather than a museum — look for the low glass box raised on stilts inside the Schweizergarten. It is a genuinely separate site from the Baroque Belvedere palaces, not a wing of them, so a ticket to one does not cover the other unless bought as a combined pass. Exhibitions close between hangs, so a rotating gap in the programme can mean an empty pavilion; check what is on before the trip.

Visitors expecting to see the Klimt and Schiele paintings the wider Belvedere brand is known for will not find them here — those stay in the Upper Belvedere, a separate ticket and a fifteen-minute walk away. Conflating the two before travelling is the single most common planning mistake for this site.

The building itself is the subject as much as anything inside it — the glass-and-steel pavilion raised on pilotis, shot low and wide from the surrounding lawn, is the standard image, and it reads distinctly against the Baroque architecture the rest of the Belvedere complex is known for. Photography rules inside a given exhibition vary by artist and lender and are posted at the entrance to that show.
