The São Paulo Museum of Art, usually called MASP, is a private not-for-profit museum founded in 1947 by Assis Chateaubriand. Its first director was the Italian critic and dealer Pietro Maria Bardi, while architect Lina Bo Bardi shaped both its building and its influential display philosophy. MASP moved from central São Paulo to Avenida Paulista in 1968. The glass-and-concrete structure, suspended above a broad open plaza, is itself a major work of twentieth-century Brazilian architecture. Do not assume that a famous work or a gallery seen in an older photograph will be on view. Picture Gallery in Transformation changes through rotations, loans and acquisitions, and temporary exhibitions have their own dates. Labels on the crystal easels are placed behind the paintings, so seeing the identification requires walking around each panel rather than following a wall sequence.
