Donauturm 소개

The Donauturm is the tallest structure in Austria, at 252 m, and it was built as a garden show attraction.

Hannes Lintl designed it and it went up between 1962 and 1964 for the Vienna International Garden Show of 1964, in the Donaupark on the far side of the Danube.

It looks like a television tower and is not one — it has never been used for television broadcasting, and carries mobile and radio antennas instead.

On 6 June 1968 a gas balloon struck the tower and three people were killed.

An observation platform at 150 m and two revolving restaurants above it.

Two lifts reach the platform in 35 seconds, carrying up to fourteen people each. The restaurants are at 161.2 m and 169.4 m and revolve, completing a circuit in 26, 39 or 52 minutes depending on the setting.

There are about 779 stairs, which are open only for the annual tower run or in an emergency.

The Donaupark around the base is a public park laid out for the 1964 garden show and is the other half of the visit.

An hour for the tower, two if you eat.

The lift takes 35 seconds each way and the platform is a single circular deck; twenty minutes is enough unless the weather is exceptional.

A meal in one of the revolving restaurants takes as long as a full rotation, which is the point.

The Donaupark and the Danube Island beyond are each an afternoon in good weather and are what the locals come out here for.

Allow forty minutes each way from the Innere Stadt; the tower is far enough out that the journey is a real part of the cost.

A clear day, and preferably late in it.

At 252 m in a flat city on a flat plain, this is the widest view available in Vienna, and on a hazy day it shows nothing that the Riesenrad does not.

Sunset puts the light behind the Innere Stadt to the south-west, which is the direction everyone wants to look.

The 779 stairs are open only for the annual run.

The park below is at its best from May to September.

Winter days are often the clearest of the year here, and the platform is enclosed and heated, so cold weather is no argument against the visit — haze is.

The tower charges admission for the lift to the observation platform. Current rates are not published on the sources this page uses and are not reproduced here.

Restaurant reservations may include or offset the lift charge, which is worth checking before buying a ticket separately.

The Donaupark below is free.

The 22nd district, Donaustadt, in the Donaupark on the left bank of the Danube.

Kaisermühlen–Vienna International Centre on U-Bahn line U1 is the nearest station, about ten minutes' walk through the park; Alte Donau, also on the U1, is a similar distance from the other side.

The U-Bahn has five lines and 109 stations over 83.9 km, running from about 05:00 to 01:00 and all night at weekends.

주의할 점

The view is the entire product and it is weather-dependent in a way a museum is not. On a hazy or overcast day there is little reason to buy the ticket.

The platform is enclosed in glass, which reflects; the outdoor level is exposed and windy at 150 m.

The restaurants revolve, which means a table by the window moves away from whatever you were looking at.

The stairs are not a public route.

The tower is out beyond the Danube and there is nothing else at the base except the park, so it is a dedicated trip.

The glass on the enclosed platform reflects badly; press the lens against it and shoot away from the interior lights, or use the outdoor level.

The Innere Stadt is 5 km to the south-west and needs a long lens to be anything more than a smudge with a spire in it; the Danube, the island and the modern towers of the Donau City are the subjects the tower actually commands.

Sunset from the outdoor level is the picture worth the trip.

The tower itself photographs best from across the Alte Donau, where the water gives it a foreground.
