MUSA Museum Startgalerie Artothek

MUSA is Wien Museum’s exhibition venue for contemporary art from Vienna, located beside City Hall in the Innere Stadt. Its changing presentations trace artistic developments in the city over recent decades and introduce less familiar positions alongside established work. Many exhibitions draw on the City of Vienna’s contemporary-art collection, which the operator describes as more than 50,000 objects by nearly 5,000 artists and one of Austria’s largest collections of its kind. A jury continues to select new acquisitions. MUSA is not a single permanent-display museum: it combines temporary collection-based exhibitions with Startgalerie and Artothek under the same roof, so the content changes while the institutional focus remains Vienna’s living art scene.

The foyer and ticket desk lead to the main contemporary-art exhibition room and Startgalerie; visitors continue through Startgalerie to reach Artothek. The current main programme pairs two exhibitions through 29 November 2026. Der Bildgenerator presents Karl Heinz Koller, while Verdichtungen presents Heliane Wiesauer-Reiterer. Startgalerie operates as a platform for artists near the beginning of their careers, adding a younger position to the larger collection-based programme. Artothek is a working lending collection rather than another conventional gallery: Vienna residents can choose framed works on paper to take home or use in an office. Because the exhibition rooms, emerging-artist programme and lending service have different purposes, check the current MUSA listing and the separate Artothek timetable before planning to use every component in one visit.

Wien Museum does not publish a standard visit duration for MUSA. Plan according to the number and scale of the current exhibitions rather than relying on the site’s generic 90-minute category duration. The main contemporary-art room and Startgalerie form a sequential route from the foyer, while Artothek is reached through Startgalerie. A visit can therefore stop after the two exhibition areas or continue into the lending collection. The programme changes, so a duration inferred from one exhibition cycle would not remain dependable for the next. Check the event calendar separately when adding a talk or guided programme, because scheduled activities publish their own start and finish times.

MUSA opens 10:00–18:00 Tuesday through Sunday and closes Monday. The operator also lists closures on 1 May, 24 December and 31 December. These hours apply to the exhibition venue; Artothek has a shorter Saturday and no Sunday service. The current exhibitions Der Bildgenerator and Verdichtungen both run through 29 November 2026, making that date the boundary for the programme described here. Check the official MUSA page for the next exhibition cycle after that date. Since admission is free, the operator does not require a general MUSA ticket, although a separately announced event may still require registration. Choose a time that leaves enough margin before 18:00 to complete the gallery route rather than arriving at the final minutes of opening.

Admission to MUSA and Startgalerie is free. Wien Museum lists both among its free offers, and the current MUSA exhibition pages also state that their exhibitions carry no admission charge. This is a venue-specific rule; it should not be confused with the paid temporary exhibitions at the main Wien Museum on Karlsplatz or the admission schedules of other Wien Museum branches. Visitors under 19 receive free admission at every Wien Museum location, but MUSA does not require an age-based concession because entry here is free for everyone. A Wien Museum annual card or Vienna City Card is therefore unnecessary for ordinary admission to MUSA’s current exhibitions. Check a separately announced programme’s own listing if attending an event rather than making a general gallery visit.

Use MUSA, Felderstraße 6–8, 1010 Vienna as the destination. The venue is beside Vienna City Hall in the Innere Stadt. The operator links to Wiener Linien for current public-transport planning but does not name a single required route on the MUSA page, so check the live journey planner from your starting point. The step-free entrance uses a lift at Rathausstraße 14 rather than the Felderstraße address. All exhibition areas and toilets are step-free and can be used with a wheelchair or pushchair. Staff invite visitors to report any access restriction they encounter through the museum’s accessibility feedback form.

Artothek does not follow MUSA’s full exhibition timetable. It opens 10:00–18:00 Tuesday through Friday and 10:00–14:00 Saturday, and closes on public holidays as well as 1 May, 24 December and 31 December. The lending service is for people resident in Vienna. Individuals may choose up to four works, while companies may borrow up to ten, for a maximum of twelve months. Each framed work costs €3 per month, paid in advance and including insurance. First-time borrowers must present official photo identification and a Meldezettel registration document. The works are supplied in aluminium frames with Plexiglas, so borrowing involves handling a physical framed object rather than receiving a reproduction. Confirm Artothek availability before making a trip whose main purpose is a loan rather than the exhibitions.

Private photography and filming are permitted in Wien Museum venues without flash, a tripod or a selfie stick. An object marked with a crossed-out camera symbol is an exception and must not be photographed. Apply that rule inside MUSA’s changing exhibitions and Startgalerie rather than assuming every displayed work can be recorded. The published permission is specifically for private purposes. Keep equipment clear of circulation routes and follow staff directions when a restriction is posted for an individual object. Because the displays change, check the signs during every visit rather than relying on the permission status of a work seen in an earlier exhibition cycle.
