Tašmajdan is a former stone quarry turned public park in central Belgrade — the name itself comes from the Turkish taš, stone, and Serbian majdan, quarry, and describes exactly what the ground was before it became green space.

The park's name is a reminder that most of central Belgrade's older streetscape is built from stone quarried within the city itself rather than brought from elsewhere, and Tašmajdan is the most visible surviving trace of that industry. Quarrying supplied building stone for the city through the Ottoman and early modern periods, and the pits it left were gradually filled and planted rather than built over, leaving the tunnels and chambers cut into the rock beneath the park still present under the surface. St. Mark's Church stands at its edge, and the two are treated together by most visitors as one stop.

Open lawns, mature trees and a children's playground fill the surface, with a sports complex — including a stadium used by local clubs — occupying part of the grounds.

A radio and television tower rises from one edge of the grounds, and the Faculty of Mathematics of the University of Belgrade fronts onto the park from its northern side, giving the space a mixed civic character beyond pure recreation. Beneath the surface, the old quarry workings were adapted into tunnels used as air-raid shelters during the Second World War; access to the tunnels themselves is not general public visiting the way the park above is. St. Mark's Church, a large Serbo-Byzantine building completed in 1940, sits at the park's edge and holds the tomb of Emperor Dušan among other historic graves.

Thirty to forty-five minutes for the park itself, longer if St. Mark's Church is added, which most visits do since the two sit side by side.

Anyone specifically interested in the wartime tunnels should research an organised visit in advance, since casual access on the day is not the norm. This is a stop rather than a destination in itself — a green break between the fortress and the Church of Saint Sava on the walk south-east from the old town.

Late afternoon, when the park fills with people finishing work rather than tourists, and the light through the mature trees is at its best.

It is an outdoor park with no indoor fallback, so a wet day is better spent elsewhere and returned to when it clears. St. Mark's Church, immediately beside it, gives an indoor option on the same stop if the weather turns while there.

The park itself is free and open at all hours, in line with Belgrade's other public parks.

St. Mark's Church, next to it, is also free to enter as a working Orthodox church, with donations customary rather than a ticket. Neither the park nor the church require advance booking, and both can be visited on the same walk without planning.

Trams and buses run along its edges. There is no metro in Belgrade; trams, buses and trolleybuses run instead, and the old town is walkable end to end.

As with any open city park, valuables should not be left unattended on the lawns, and the paths nearest the sports stadium are busier and less park-like on match days.

The old quarry tunnels beneath the park are not a general visitor route and should not be assumed accessible without an organised arrangement. During and after the Communist era, parts of the quarry tunnels were used for purposes beyond shelter, and local accounts of what lies beneath the park vary; treat any specific claim about the tunnels' current condition with some caution rather than as settled fact. St. Mark's Church, like Belgrade's other working churches, expects shoulders and knees covered and quiet during services.

The tree-lined avenues photograph best in the low light of early morning or early evening rather than the flat overhead sun of midday, when the canopy gives even, filtered light rather than harsh shade.
